68 pounds of meth seized in traffic stop

A man was arrested Monday after an officer conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 10 near Marana found 68 pounds of methamphetamine manufactured in Mexico in a pickup truck the man was driving, an official said.

Joshio A. Amarillas, 18, was arrested on suspicion of violating federal narcotics charges.

The wholesale street value of the methamphetamine is $952,000, said Arizona Department of Public Safety Sgt. Mark Morlock, who works for the multi-agency Counter Narcotics Alliance.

Tucson police Capt. David Neri, commander of the Counter Narcotics Alliance, said the seizure was one of the largest in the Tucson metropolitan area. He said 68 pounds would yield more than 123,000 quarter-gram doses.

A quarter gram is a large dose, Neri said, with many users taking half or a third of that amount.

The officer pulled Amarillas over about 11:30 a.m. for following the vehicle in front of him too closely. Amarillas then gave the officer consent to search the vehicle, perhaps not realizing the officer had a drug-sniffing dog, Morlock said.

The dog, named Rico, alerted the officer to a false compartment in the bed of the pickup where the drugs were found, Morlock said.

Detectives from the Counter Narcotics Alliance arrived and found 68 one-pound bags in a four-inch compartment lining the entire truck bed, Morlock said. An investigation determined that the methamphetamine was headed for the Phoenix metropolitan area where it would likely have gone to a stash house before being redistributed.

Some of the drugs may have ended up in Tucson, Morlock said.
Amarillas, a U.S. citizen, was turned over to agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and booked into the Maricopa County jail, Morlock said.

The vehicle driven by Amarillas came into the United States through the Nogales port of entry about 9 a.m. Monday, Morlock said. The driver of the pickup is likely part of a larger drug network.

"We have identified this as being part of a major methamphetamine ring based in Mexico and we along with the DEA are investigating," Morlock said.

Through the investigation, detectives learned that two or three other shipments from the same organization may have made it into the United States, Neri said. He did not know the time frame in which the methamphetamine got into the country.

The Counter Narcotics Alliance and the Drug Enforcement Administration are following up on leads developed from the investigation and expect additional arrests, Morlock said.

Monday's arrest comes less than a week after Tucson police announced the bust of a methamphetamine ring that was selling 2 1/2 pounds of the drug every week in Midtown.

Neri said that police believe suppliers were bringing Patricia Loya, 47, as much as 17 pounds of methamphetamine in trips from Mexico.
Twenty-four people, including Loya, have been arrested or indicted in connection with the drug ring.

Police believe Loya would either sell drug herself or have smaller dealers distribute it, Neri said.

The bust came after residents in the Oak Flower and Dodge Flower neighborhoods contacted police about the prevalence of the drug in their communities.

could that possibly be the correct wholesale value? WoW, thats around 8 bucks for a quarter gram, according to there 123,000 quarter gram calculation.

when ur getting 68 punds of meth, im sure it would cost about 25 a gram. and still thats pretty expenisve if your getting that much quantity.

Yeah I saw this on the front cover of the paper today (I live in Tucson).

There's a handful of drug busts that make the front page every month down here. That can definitely be attributed to the fact that we're about an hour from Mexico.

this sort of stuff happens alot in Arizona. many, many meth freaks here. This kid was probobly just a pawn in a large meth ring out of mexico
