i've been looking for a way to burn convenient formats such as .avi to a dvd that's watchable in a dvd player have tried a few programs but none so far work, either failing in the conversion stages or continually burning coasters. Any recommendations?

I suggest going a different route...

Buy a standalone divx (avi) player. At wal-mart they have many for cheap. Just burn the avi file to a CD or DVD and the player will play it.

Probably the best, painfully simple one click to .vob converter out there.

Most movies today are encoded using the xvid codec. Most set-top players wont be able to play them since they were designed to use the Divx codec.

Actually, I have never encountered a divx player that wont play xvid too. The famous Phillips DVP642 plays both, and every one they sell at walmart plays both too. Since, as you say, most shows are encoded in xvid today, the manufacturer would be stupid not to play them. What stand alone players wont play (usually) is high resolution files (720p etc). But if you want high resolution, you probably have a HDTV, in which case you can just play the files off of your hard drive.

Not bad....It's been awhile since I've read up on any of the set-top players. I remember the first ones that came out atleast 4 years ago.

Im currently streaming most of my hd media(x264) over to my tv via vga....but Im going to have to upgrade the computer preeetttty soon. On most 1080i and p flicks, you'll get that stuttering going on.

Man, kids these days have it so fucking easy. When I wanted a video to play on my dvd player 5 years ago, I had to convert it to svcd.

Which left me with about 3 or 4 cd-r's per movie. Lord Of The Rings was around 5 cds. Haha. Good times.

I have a really cheap Norcent one that couldn't have costed more than $30 that plays .avi files.

since there isn't a re: everyone button, thanks for the responses I didn't expect so many. I had a copy of convertxtodvd but it was infected, so never bothered looking again but thanks I'll try again. Ill most definately try DIKO and DeVeDe, it's mainly for my g/f she has a little tv/dvd combi for watching films in bed hence not worth the effort (yet) for getting a divx player but that is a future option. I have a data projector I connect my computer to (though the fucking bulb blew this morning so i'm running it through my backup vga monitor). Plus it's good to take new films to friends.

crazy, i'm the 55555th viewer for diko lol.

trying these just now, well trying DIKO just now. Any way of getting it to encode at least 2x real time? or will another piece of software do that?

running a 64bt athlon, 1gb paired ram with 64bt operating system. Speed isn't the problem, if it is then I guess ill find out when I get my x2 chip.

Lack of speed is the problem if you want real time, or faster than real time encoding. Video compression is a very expensive (read slow) task for computers to perform.

yup, the magnavox divx player at walmart is less than $40, and it has played everything (listed on the box) i threw at it (divx, xvid, mpg/dvd)
