Legislature Considers Banning Hallucinogenic Drug
January, 22, 2007 - wcsh6.com

Salvia Divinorum is a legal, hallucinogenic drug. By chewing, smoking or drinking it as a tea, users get the same effects as LSD. It can be found in smoke shops around Maine. But now, there's a bill to ban it.

The Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee held a public hearing Monday on the bill Representative Chris Barstow (D-Gorham) proposed.

"I think it's becoming more and more prevalant because of the easy access it has right now. Even more reason for us to want to put a restriction on it," said Barstow.

The drug, which is an herb, has been around for years. But now, it's gaining popularity, especially with young people and that's something health officials want to curb.

"To me this is no different than any of the illegal drugs that are already illegal. And so the question is why is it legal? Well, it's legal because of a loophole, because nobody noticed it," said Kim Johnson of the Office of Substance Abuse.

People who sell Salvia, though, say outlawing it isn't the way to go. "It is very clear to us by the lack of incidents surrounding this substance that many of the projected fears are inconceived and conjecture," said Christopher Ruhlin, who owns Herbal Tea and Tobacco in Bangor.

If there are any restrictions put on Salvia, Ruhlin says it should only be on the age of the person buying it. He said he can understand passing a law that restricts anyone younger than 18 from buying the drug.

At Middle Earth in Bangor, the owner is advertising people buy as much Salvia as they can before it's outlawed.

Four other states have outlawed Salvia and a teenager's suicide in Delaware has been linked to the drug. A violation of the law would be a misdemeanor and result in a fine, and perhaps jail time.

Wow, I didn't know salvia had the same effects as LSD.  So that means that it lasts for 8 hours or more, right?

This is the first I've ever heard of making salvia tea also.

"users get the same effects as LSD."

People who think shit like that are the ones making the laws? Someone really needs to shoot these people.

Salvia tea exists and does work. It takes a lot of plant material though.

It basically feels like you are coming out of an ego-loss trip over and over again for 3 hours, while riding an escalator.

If the store owners were really smart, they would start selling plants now. They would make a lot of profit, and keep the supply around longer.

Its amazing how every article written about salvia says how much its like LSD. When is the media going to be held accountable for its lies?

All I can say is this: I need to get a Salvia plant ASAP. Any suggestions?

Try it before you worry too much about growing it. The plant is nothing at all remotely close to an LSD trip... I puchased five grams of 5x extract almost a decade ago and still have a few grams left... the trip isn't very good, imho.

I agree. I never understood the hype. I bought some many years ago and ended up giving it away. At the urge of others on this site I hav tried it again...still not my cup of tea. I love DMT, LSD, mecal, RC's, and of course the mushroom....but if I wanted to feel like salvia makes me feel I could just as easily stick my head in a wood chipper. Not that I am against the drug, it just isn't for me. Its good to see people can get something good out of the experience though.

I dont see why we need another illegal plant in this country though? We need to be taking things off those lists, not adding to them. WHEN WILL SOMEONE STAND UP AGAINST OUR GOVERNMENT?!

Hah, man... that is too funny. I actually tried this for the first time the other day, the exact same packaging used in the picture here as a matter of fact...

The short-lived Salvia high is nothing like LSD. I tried Salvia several times with bland results... Now DMT on the other hand, theres a real short-term trip

Its not democrats, its not republicans. Its not eastern or western. Its not civilized or uncivilized. Its not christian nations or islamic nations....its the entire population of those in control of the world.

Please someone name ONE place on planet earth where I am not breaking a single law by partaking in any drug I please? One place? The country...this planet...humanity...we are FAR from free. Drug use is only an example.

Actually I heard Salvia is exactly the same as PCP! Just like Ecstacy and LSD.

What a moron. The reason Salvia is still legal is that it is so unlike any other illegal drug, otherwise they would have scheduled it already via the Analogue Act. Plus it is so short and alot of people don't like it. If alot people enjoyed it then we would have a problem.

Of course the logic always follows: non-addictive, non-toxic, is it alcohol or tobaco? Ok then it's illegal.

I'm in full agreement with you. I wanted to point this out as it can sometimes be the conventional wisdom among "drug people" to assume so called liberal factions in government pose less a threat to our personal choices.
Though I would take issue with your dismissal of comparative degrees of civilization playing more or less equal roles in restrictive power structures.
The truly “uncivilized” possess the apparatus to control others only within a very limited sphere.
As far as that one place on earth where you can freely partake of any drug legally... heck there are millions of those places, once you affirm the arbitrary nature of Law and incorporate an informed and cleverly employed disregard, you are free pretty much anywhere. You do of course have to consider overarching laws as a very real monster and take adequate precautions to avoid them… much like the “uncivilized would avoid hungry bears, shark infested waters, and hostile head hunting cannibalistic tribes.

I have never tried LSD before. But a level 2 to 3 slavia trip(only experiences) feels exactly like what i thought LSD would feel like. Every is brighter and cartoony. I dunno, I totally agree that it feels like LSD but i have never done it! I mean visual wise is all. This drug should not be compared to LSD though because acid lasts forever and salvia is a super short trip.

I'll give you a warning. Don't buy shit from kayman9. He refuses to send another plant (which he initially agreed to), refuses to give me a refund and has now stopped returning my PMs.

Its nothing like LSD. How can you say its something like LSD and you havent done it? Especially when I, and everyone else in the world except for those writing these articles (and I assume they havent done both) say they are nothing alike.

The drug should not be compared to LSD because it is not ANYTHING LIKE LSD...not just because the trips are different lenghts.
