Treeplanters workout
    #6466181 -

So, as ive posted before, im going treeplanting in May for the first time.

Typically im against "working out", and by that i mean, isolating muscle groups on machines and free lifting. I prefere *fullbody* workouts like biking, swimming, working, etc.

Anyways, its been a few months since ive worked hard, and i bike little more than occassionally in the cold winter.

Knowing that treeplanting will likely be the hardest job i've ever done (on par with saw mill/pallet factory) - im looking to train both my mind and body for a couple months in the gym. In Jr. High i worked out alot (obsessively) and felt comfortable with my workout routine. However, now im looking to brush up on my workout knowledge. Im a tad uncertain on what i should be working and how i should be working it.

I figure, back, arms, legs, shoulders, Cardio. Id like to use machines mostly (compared with freeweights) as they help with correct posture.

What kind of exercises should i be looking at, specifically?

To give you a general answer I would go for upper body one day, lower body another, and cardio on the third. When your doing upper body use as many upper body machines as you can, and likewise for when your doing lowerbody. I'm not an expert of any sorts but this is loosely based on my own workout routine.

I did some tree planting and it does take alot out of you, esp if your digging in clay.

Alright, so ill be more specific in my question:

Just browsing google for "beginning workouts" im at a loss for direction,

Im looking for an overall health routine, certainly not body building.. Maybe strength training - i want to remain lean.

Seems most of the info is for "weight gain" or "weight loss" more than anything else.

Just go to the gym and kill yourself.
And, doesnt bodybuilding.com forums have a specific subforum specifically for strength-training?
I also suggest to do use some freeweights because they work the balancing muscles which would come in handy for such jobs as treeplanters, and free weights do help alot with posture (atleast for me they did).

Thanks eligal - minimal advice, but pretty much what im looking for.

The thing with free weights i worry about, is hurting myself. Straining myself by doing it wrong - and getting told off by some big buff dude or hockey playin' jock.

Im mostly just.. sort of nervous about going to a gym, where a tattoo'd dreadhead will stick out like a sore thumb.

Ill keep browsin' about strength training - and anyone else who would like to respond is more than welcome to..

Don't worry about going to the gym man. You'll run into some assholes but there's always alot of people willing to help you out if you need it too. As for hurting yourself, to avoid that just learn how to do the exercise correctly first(bodybuilding.com has exercise explanations and videos showing you how to do them) and then start out slow and really focus on correct form. Once you get the movements down you can gradually up the weight as your strength goes up. You could also just do bodyweight exercises if you think that will be enough.

work on your posture and flexibility!
you're going to spend a lot of time hunched over and if you don't do it right you're going to hurt your body! learn how to move and work your limbs (sounds simple but most people get it wrong :smirk:)

digging a hole in the ground is mostly about the technique rather then your physical strength, make sure you learn how to do it right and remember to be conscious of your body and how it works. remember to breath freely, listen and respect your body and its limits!

it's really not that hard after the first two weeks as long as you give your body what it needs (staying hydrated and taking the time to rest every few hours for at least half an hour straight, and also do your best to take the time after you eat to digest a little before you get back to digging)

learn some good warm up and release techniques and do your best to use them before and after work!

and last but not least... enjoy

Hey thanks for the words of encouragement Simisu, definately things to keep in mind which could easily be forgotten in times of pressure.

I was speaking with my stepdad about the gym today - and apperently the lady/manager will set up with an exercise routine and show me proper form and use of all the machines when i sign up!

$37 bucks a month, on a month to month basis, no commitment.

Don't be concerned about putting on bulky muscles. Us bodybuilders have a hard enough time, and considering that some people like myself count calories, balance macros and time them in a precise order you won't have to worry about accidentally getting hyooge or not staying leaner.

For functional strength, you should use heavy compound movements, which probably goes against your ideology. But it's a good answer to building functional strength.

What isn't more functional or common than bending over and picking something up (the deadlift and rows for example? You'll probably have a lot of fun lifting weights. I know I sure do. Just make sure to eat good and get adequate rest because you don't want to be lethargy when it comes time to work. lol

aye. you probably dont even have to worry about focusing on your arms, either. Most core body workouts use them secondary.

dont forget about situps! Keep your core strong.
