"Theory of Everything"
    #6411525 -

Einstein started it, modern science and cosmology have finished it. It's the "Theory of Everything", the source of the universe and the infinite number of those surrounding us this very instant.

I just watched it on the Science Channel (God bless) and I must say, it was probably the most profound documentary I've seen.

It starts with the String Theory, stating limited to mine own understanding that the universe is essentially the vibrating "waves" of a greater string. Our space and time exist as a result of a greater action.

This String Theory then evolves into the Membrane Theory, or the M Theory, or in essence the "Theory of Everything". It suggests that our universe and all ten of its ten dimensions (time and the nine other spacial dimensions) exist in an eleventh dimension, also called the "multi-verse". In this dimension an infinite number of other universe exist, where physics, chemistry, even mathematics can be either slightly different or not exist at all.

So think of it on the cellular level. We have atoms that make compounds, that further branch into cells, which make organs, which make us. Traditionally, this is where the tree ends, but suppose it branches further, which is the case of the M Theory. We live in our universe, which makes up a dimension, which coexists with other dimensions. Suppose those other dimensions in combination with ours make up something else (perhaps the Gods?).

But where does it all begin? Since we have here the "Theory of Everything", why not explain the driving question of the Big Bang? Where did it come from, what caused it, and why?

Well the scientists explain the possibility that amongst these infinite number of universe that exist within the eleventh dimension there are collisions between them. Just as when ice collides with one another in clouds to create static that creates lightning, the force of impact between these membrane bound universe creates yet another universe, ours.

There are so many other details to this whole idea that I could only hope to comprehend, but given the overall idea I see that my simple day dream of having an infinitely branching tree of existence is slowly becoming a respectable scientific theory.

Thoughts?

M-Theory: Advanced exercise in mathematics and physics that is completely (as yet) untestable and thus is B.S.?

There is another "scientific theory" that is untestable yet pushed on the public as a valid theory, intelligent design.

What makes M-Theory a "valid" scientific theory, and Intelligent Design an "invalid" theory?

lol!

It sounds really cool, tho it doesn't seem like a new discovery to me, just slowly figuring out and explaining exactly what was always supposed and claimed by spiritual figures millenneas old.

not sure if there's a link, i saw it on TV, but it's likely to be out there somewhere, be it on DVD or google. i think it's gonna be back on again on monday, check your guide for times.

to try and say that a theory is valid or invalid seems oxymoronic, since what makes a theory is the lack of proof. intelligent design is by no means any more or less abstract than m-theory, they are both equally confusing and imaginative. i think what sets m-theory apart from intelligent design is the level of reasoning involved with it, the sheer level of quantum math and science seems to validate itself.

further more i don't see any reason for m-theory to require any sort of "faith" or belief. whether or not the universe is the result of a galactic Brownian movement among infinite universe or the complex creation of some superior intelligence is not important. all that m-theory implies is how, specifically, the universe MAY have been created, with strong evidence supporting it.

Btw, "The Theory of Everything" is also a book that was released by some so-called super genious or whatever shit like that whoknows fuckit all damn.

Anyways it's also a book, which intends to be exactly what its title say, that I read about in the paper a year ago. It should be a great read, I ought to get it myself.

Is this relevant?: http://www.torrentz.com/55478c406631881c5ed81aaec72241d127f36a59

sorry i can't give any links, i would take the time to find them for you guys if i knew it wasn't going to be on the air again on monday.

it's really not meant to give any concrete answers as to where we came. honestly, it only broadens the scope with this whole eleventh dimension thing. if you watch the documentary then you'll see that the idea of the "cosmic brownian movement" was only lightly discussed by three predominate scientists on a train on their way to see a play. the only reason it should be taken seriously is because they're brilliant.

but yea, you're right, it's essentially an evolution of the age old idea that's been around since the first works of man told us:

we are the lesser of a greater.

Was the show called "Parallel Universe"? If so, it will be on today (12/31) at 5:00 PM ET.

Precisely because science can't answer questions like, "Why does the universe exist?" Science cannot produce ultimate, verifiable statements; it can only produce working hypothesis, so a "theory of everything" is, in the limit, just an excellent working hypothesis.

For example, the "theory of everything in chemistry" can be reduced to Schrodinger's equation and the rest of quantum mechanics. That's all you need to answer any question in chemistry (and a big, powerful computer if you want to do anything remotely practical). But quantum mechanics can't tell us why it exists. It just tells us how it seems to work.

Well the scientists explain the possibility that amongst these infinite number of universe that exist within the eleventh dimension there are collisions between them.

Scientists said that? No doubt they were having fun on their documentary as this is more "goofy speculation" than anything.

my simple day dream of having an infinitely branching tree of existence is slowly becoming a respectable scientific theory.

Nonsense. You can't test those silly "infinite universe" day dreams, so they are not scientific thoeries. They might be what scientists daydream about when thinking about quantum physics, but there is no way that something like that could pass as even mere scientific hypothesis.

yea, it's called "parallel universe" on the science channel.

i hope you guys watch it today and get your own opinions, it'll be a lot easier to debate the theory that way. be sure to check it out or at least record it. i'm gonna be getting blitzed so i'll miss it this time.

good points chemiker, you should definitely watch it first, though. the scientists' ideas of cosmic collision is just what you said, a "goofy speculation". the production of the documentary sort of implies that.

but yea, check it out and see what you get from it. not only is it an interesting theory but it's a decently produced documentary.

Why did you rate cosmos42 bad for making a thread, the title of which is even in quatiations, on a documentary he watched just because you don't like the theory? That's messed.

PBS Nova has a popular (maybe a bit too pop) documentary on the subject. It's called The Elegant Universe.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/elegant/

And it's available on Bit-torrent

btw, mvgroup.org is the best place for documentary torrents, but you need to sign up. They also have Hi-Def docs

The Elegant Universe documentary is a bit kitschy, but I heartily recommend the book by the same name. It explores String Theory in great detail and explains the concepts in a way I think most people would understand.

I dont believe a lick of it, you understand. I'll believe it when they prove it. As it stands, its just a pretty idea for how things might be.

I did it because it fucking amuses is why (the reason is probably in the rating: one stupid sentence = bad rating).  If someone doesn't like it then all they have to do is PM me ask me to change it.  I don't give a fuck about ratings so it stands to reason that if I live by the 'golden rule' I have nothing stopping me from giving out poor ratings for the flimsiest of reasons.  I don't feel a need to justify myself but if someone is going to whine about it or be upset by it, then they just need to  PM me and ask me to change it.   I hand out poor ratings just as easily as I hand out good ones, but nobody ever asks me to justify the good ratings.  It shouldn't be a big deal.
