I need help with supercritical fluid extraction of cannabis
    #6395484 -

If someone where to obtain aproxamately 1/2 lb of shake.
Woud the mentioned extraction technique be the one wich would produce the highest quality of finished product?
At first I planned on using butane to extract the goodies from the shake.
But then I thought maybe you could use CO2?
I thought about it a bit more and came to a question wich I had no idea how to answer, "What if I used the Co2 on BHO?
I am pretty stoned right now, so I cant type very well.
I think I am just gonna go the BHO route n then conduct an experiment on the BHO, by running CO2 through it..
Does anyone have any suggestions on this?
I think I read of something bein doen a whiole ago with CO2 but I cat remember anything about it.
Also wich do you think will be better, the BHO or the BHO through CO2, and to what extent?
Thanks alot. :stoned:

girl, please, just use the BHO method

CO2 only exists as a gas or solid at atmospheric pressure. butane has a much higher bp, it stays liquid at atmospheric pressure, until it evaporates away.

in order for CO2 to work, it would have to be in the liquid phase. the only way to keep it liquid is to do your extraction in a pressurized vessel.

I have been toying with the idea of trying to use liquid nitrogen, which I have access to, but I don't have a bunch of trim around to try it on.

wait, I don't understand, are you asking about using CO2 as the solvent, or running CO2 through already extracted (via butane) honey oil.  there's no reason for doing the latter so I assumed it was the former.

co2 is not a solvent  butane is the shit, nothing even comes close..make sure to use good butane..like colibri,or something that is refined 5x

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/solvent

n.
  1. Chemistry
        1. A substance in which another substance is dissolved, forming a solution.
        2. A substance, usually a liquid, capable of dissolving another substance.

'When carbon dioxide is below the critical parameters, (Pc=73.8 atm and Tc=31.1o C) two distinct phases exist, liquid and vapor. By increasing the system temperature, the liquid expands and the two phases become less distinct forming a new phase, which is known as the Supercritical State. This Supercritical State has very powerful solvent properties of gas compressed to its critical point, defined by the pressure and temperature. A Supercritical State has a useful combination of liquid-like density and solvency, and gas-like viscosity, diffusivity, compressibility and lack of surface tension. Therefore, CO2 rapidly penetrates substrates and dissolves a wide range of chemicals. This critical region of CO2 is characterized by an ability to control the solvent power with only minor changes in pressure and temperature, resulting in more extractsĂȘ selectivity. A reverse process occurs by decreasing the system temperature resulting in a phase separation between the liquid and the vapor.'

you don't know what you're talking about.  nice try though.

Please, lets not battle semantics, he wants to know if using CO2 would be a good way of making honey oil.

Personally I think BHO is close as your going to get.

was that directed towards me, cause ive been growing nugs and making oil, hash  for 10 years, you can spew what ever shit ya want ,but co2 doesnt make honey oil  i can cut and paste techo shit as well

yep i dont know nothing about growing buds :smirk:  btw where are your nug shots??

How about freon?
It evaporates fast too, but it only needs to remain liquid long enough to flow through an extraction vessel.

Calm down tree huggers.

A closed system wouldn't be to hard build. Reclaimers are available for sale to the general public or you can make your own out of an old refrigerator compressor.

You'll have to use your imagination here.
freon tank #1-> high pressure tubing-> extraction vessel-> one way valve-> evaporation chamber-> tubing-> reclaimer+ freon tank #2

1. Tank #1 expels liquid when opened upside down.
2. Tubing= hydraulic hose or metal tubing that can handle pressure.
3. Extractor= metal pipe + threaded end caps tapped for nipple fittings. Outlet cap needs screens to contain weed.
4. Directional valves can be found at most hardware stores. This prevents back pressure as liquid expands changing into gas.
5. Evaporate= A empty fire extinguisher tank or other chamber built to hold pressure fitted with inlet at the bottom for liquid and outlet at the top for gas.

As freon evaporates the extracted oils are left in the chamber. It can then be reclaimed with alcohol.

I tried to leave my signature but it didn't work...
By the way... Does anybody know how to get sharpie markers off of a computer screen?

So under what conditions does CO2 remain liquid?

who said anything about growing?  and why is the fact you can grow pot relevant to this discussion in any way?  like it's really fucking hard to grow a plant, please :whatever:.  if you wanna see my pics look in my gallery or do a search, I'm not gonna dig them up, I have nothing to prove to you.  sorry if what I say is over your head.

CaptainKirk said:
co2 is not a solvent

you said that like you had a clue wtf you were talking about, which you obviously didn't.  so I called you on it because I don't like it when people talk out of their ass, especially when they're saying I'm wrong and I'm really not.  end of story.

i mentioned what i did because I was interested in letting the original poster know whats up and perhaps starting some theoretical discussion on the use of solvents other than butane.  since that is the topic of the thread, not who has grown pot the longest or run the most batches of butane honey oil.  I'd suggest moving the thread to ODD, that probably wouldn't be much better though...

but to answer the above question, to keep CO2 in the liquid phase it has to be under at least 5.1atm of pressure.  my wording may have been misleading above though, to use it as a solvent you want it to be 'supercritical'.  not quite liquid, not quite gas. this happens above 73atm and 31.1C.  the link explains it better.

and thank you cricket, for giving me a glimmer of hope for this place .

yes kids, don't fuck around with pressurized vessels and shit if you don't know what you're doing.  butane is cheap, easy and effective, for small amounts.  I'm not suggesting anyone try anything with CO2, or that it makes a higher quality product or whatever, I have never done it and would probably not go that route myself.  It would work, but personally I was more interested in hearing what people might think about the liquid N2...

anyway :smirk:
