Peruvian police seized 14 tons of cocaine in 2006

General Carlos Olivo, chief of Peru's Anti-Drug Unit (DINANDRO in Spanish), informed that over 14 tons of cocaine have been seized in Peru in 2006.

According to Olivo, a total of over 20 tons of illegal drugs were seized this year, of which 14 were cocaine, 5 tons were base paste (used to produce cocaine), 1.13 tons were marijuana, and 100 kilograms were materials used to produce opium.

"It is worrisome for the country of Peru and for the Peruvian government that 60% of all drugs produced here enter foreign markets," expressed the chief.

Olivo added that the value of a kilo of cocaine in the production areas of the Apurimac-Ene and Huallaga river valleys costs just USD2500.

The price of a kilo of cocaine increases to USD5,000 in Lima, USD12,500 in Mexico, USD25,000 in the United States, and up to USD40,000 in Europe, according to Peru's top anti-drug cop.

Peru is the world's second largest cocaine producer, behind Colombia, and it is estimated that some 60,000 families live off the coca cultivation industry according to information from the United Nations.
