Loosely Scheduled Maintenance Today

So I'm working to switch the board search engine from mySQL's built-in fulltext capabilities to Sphinx which is MUCH faster. I'm also trying to track down the missing posts and figure out what happened to them. If the board goes down or appears unresponsive, don't panic - it's not another hardware failure (knock on wood) and the interruption should be relatively brief. You are witnessing firsthand how slow and clunky it is to change the structure of the posts table, a problem which should be addressed when we can drop the fulltext indexes on that behemoth once and for all. Hehe... I'm afraid I don't have any great links. http://peter-zaitsev.livejournal.com/12809.html is what originally sparked my interest because of the benchmark results and ensuing discussion. Then I just used the official website at http://www.sphinxsearch.com/ as a reference when I was setting it up (seems to be offline at the moment). The forums there are fairly active, looks like you could get a response to questions and bug reports. More importantly the performance seems great, I was able to run a boolean search on all the posts in the BB, with no stopwords, in .001 second.

There are some caveats, for instance there's no way to "live update" an index, you have to rebuild it from scratch. However, the documentation has a good example of how you can use a main + delta index scheme to overcome this problem. Boolean mode supports AND, OR and grouped terms but not exact phrases (yet). And of course it's still in early development which makes some people wary, but for this site I think its performance benefits are too significant to ignore. Table locking is becoming a serious problem and the huge indexes make any DB maintenance very time-consuming. Sphinx should fix both of these issues.
