Forum Index Auto Updates
    #6253154 -

I've modified the board index so it auto updates forum information in real-time. You will see new posts being made, and can watch the user count change as people move around the forums. I think it's pretty cool, it can be used to monitor the activity in your favorite forums and it makes the board seem less 'static' and more 'alive' (forgive the cheesy adjectives but you get the idea). I'm not sure what kind of impact it will have on people with slower computers or internet connections though, so please let me know if you have any problems!

Wow, so it's steaming like a chat room kind of now? That's cool. Will it still know to show us as offline after 10+ mins or whatever of no activity? (if we leave the browser sitting on the forum index and walk away)

Pretty much, yeah. If you leave it sitting at the forum index you will remain marked as online, but if you navigate away you will time out after 10 minutes like before. I can change this though.

I'll remember that and try not to keep it on the index unless at the computer - so people don't think that I'm online but just ignoring them or something.

Just saw a post pop up while viewing the index, so it works good on my crappy setup (my old computer and browser).

I am on IE 6.0, same version and it works for me. Did you leave it sit so you could see the pub and otd for a while paying close attention? Nothing happens or what? Does it show new posts after you refresh?

p.s. Are you even looking at the main index or are you in a forum?

hmm, well the front page looks different, more lines dividing the forums on the bb index, ,but still not updating....

is it some sort of timed refresh option where it reloads every x seconds, or is it an instant update?

Yeah, it looks like there is now a small table border in the forum index which is new. I saw it change all of the sudden and was like "whoa", but I still think it's cool.

This is now a setting you can toggle; on the main forum index scroll to the bottom and check 'Monitor forum activity'. You may need to clear your cache to get the new Javascript. Hope some people find this useful!

Ythan you're working on making us all your zombie slaves, are you?
this feature really makes a difference for the "feel" of the forum!

you should add a total number of users for the categories in the index so we could see how many people are reading the growing/info/experience sections and how many "hang" around in the social forums... you might also want to add a figure for the arcade
even how many people are using the search engine...

weird bug.. the mod tag (m) sticks to the top post when it refreshes..

W_S had a thread on top, then when Kilroy's thread moved to the top, the mod tag stuck with him

Refrshing it manually reset the tag to the right place

Yeah I think that was happening with me when I used it. It would update, and then it would switch back to the way it was before it updated. I still refresh manually. :smirk:

One more thing...

On the thread that is refreshed, when it jumps to the top, clicking on the thread title brings you to the first post, not the unread posts..
