Morrowind Keeps Crashing

It is driving me crazy. I'm trying to play Morrowind on my computer, and the damn screen will either go black with a notification that Morrowind needs to close, or the computer will just restart. When we originally set this computer up, we were having issues with the damn program, and I think it had something to do with the video card or something? I could post error logs if it would help present a clearer picture. Let me round up my specifications...

Microsoft Windows XP, Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2
Intel Celeron CPU 2.40 GHz
2.40 GHz, 512 MB of RAM

The display adapter is "Sapphire Radeon 9600SE Edition".

I'm not sure what the problem is, because my computer should be able to handle the program. Here are the recommended requirements for the program:

Anyone see any possible conflicts, or perhaps some questions that may shed light on this matter? Its a problem I've been dealing with for years now, and I'd like to start playing this game again.

Would the fact that I have a Radeon 9600SE mean that it wouldn't work, since the highest one they list as being supported is the ATI Radeon 8500? Hhmm...  :strokebeard:

Random restarts and error messages could often be symptomatic of an overheating problem, probably with the CPU or GPU.

What's your cooling setup like?

Is your system stable when you run benchmarking/stress-testing software like 3dmark and prime95?

Actually, overheating might certainly be the primary source of trouble. In fact, I've been meaning to get on the floor and pull the computer out of the desk and give it some cool air for it. I think that it has always been prone to overheating, even back in Norway when we first put it together, and I'd have to imagine that Morrowind puts much more of a strain on the computer to run than IE, Messenger, and Winamp do. :smirk:

I did snoop around Bethesda's forums and find out that if one's video card isn't specifically one of the ones that are listed as being supported, that they might work but adjustments might have to be made. I'm wondering what that means... :grin:

I'll take and set this computer up with more air right now. :wink:
