How sick do you have to be...

Before you call in sick? Today, at work I was sniffling all day and feeling like shit. On the one hand, I was wishing I had called in sick. But on the other hand, I'm on thin ice with my boss as it is, so I didn't want to skip out on work unless it was absolutely necessary. I still got plenty of work done, but it was harder to do, and I wasn't functioning on my normal level. If I don't feel better by tomorrow, I'm thinking of calling in sick(which I've never done at any job I've held). But for some reason, I don't feel right calling in sick when it's just a cold.

I went in with the flu, it was 30F in the shop, I work with steel

I gotta be pretty damned sick, like pneumonia sick to not show up for work

i think i'd rather go in with pneumonia than the flu. if the flu is a bad one. i'd take pneumonia over a bad flu any day of the week.

I don't usually call in sick unless I'm vomiting, or think that I may soon be vomiting.  :shrug:  But I've been the sole support and caregiver for two little boys for many years, so the stakes are pretty high.

I work in a warehouse, disassembling computers and electronics. The thing that makes it hardest on me with this cold is I have to use a drill and a hammer whilst my ears are popping.

I wouldn't feel bad missing work because I was sick. If you're legitimately sick and you feel as if your perfomance is going to be impaired, it's not like you're taking advantage of anybody. It's something you have no real control over, so just take care of it by staying home a day and getting some rest, rather than stringing it out over several days by forcing yourself to work while you're sick.
