im having some hunting problems/dilemmas

so after yesterday when i found those two sweet patches, i went back to that same neighborhood to see if i could find anymore...and i did!!! i found another very nice sized one behind this person house and on their property. And AS SOON as i spotted it, i heard a "HEY WHATS GOIN'OVER HERE!!?". my heart started racing, and i stood up from the ground. the (asummed) home owner came over to me and said "what the hell are you doing!?" and i siad something like "i thought i saw a wierd animal and came over to look at it"(shitty excuse i know). he looked at me wierd and said "then can i help you with something"? and i simply said "no" and he pointed in the direction of leaving and said well get outta here.

i proceeded to leave and i saw him go over where i was at and look around all cofused as to what i was doing so i dont think he knew what i was doing. then i left and walked around more and found lots of more niiice habitat for cyans and almost every place i found the ideal habitat, it was always in someones yard or well on their property.

i also got caught walking on this other ladies property and i heard a dog bark and turned around to leave and she came out the house and let the dog out. it came after me and i said whoa whoa! she then asked me what i was doing, and i said i was trying to cut through, she believed me and said you cant cut throught here, i apologized for any inconvenience and went on my way.

basically what im trying to get at is around where i live, there are TON and TONS...and TONS! of perefect ideal habitat for cyanescens, and seems like everyone around here mulches there gardens and lawns with woodchips. there are at least ten huge woodchip beds i saw that HAD to of had some cyans growing somewhere but my problem is, is i dont want to keep venturing on there property and keep getting caught by all these home owners. im inclined to think one of these days one of them might catch me in the act and ill get in alot of trouble.

are there any hints or tips that i can get from anyone that could help me be more, idk, decisive about my picking?? i want to check these beds out and if any homeowners catch me walking around there parts, are there any good excuses for being on there property? do any of you fellow shroomerites have the same problems? if so how do you deal with it??? please help me, i know there are tons of cyans out there waiting for me right now but im sketched out to go check out the woodchip beds now :confused:. id appreciate if anyone answers any of my questions.

get clever about selecting your hunting spots. businesses, parks, places it's not unusual to see someone walking or hanging out. it's your best bet.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

First of all, don't act like you got caught doing something wrong.

I would suggest telling them what you're doing:

"I hunt wild gourmet mushrooms for a hobby, and I noticed some mushrooms growing here. I was just taking a closer look. Did you know you had these growing in your yard? Do you mind if I pick some of these and take them home to identify?" Chances are he would have said yes. Then you come back later and tell him how lucky he is to have a "safe" hallucinogenic variety growing in his yard.

Most people are at least intrigued when I tell them of my new hobby, and once in a while someone responds with something like "you know I've always been curious about psychedelic mushrooms".

Uhhh.... not a good policy to mention the "hallucinogenic" properties. Not at all.

Simply explain that you are hunting edible mushrooms.

Good advice curecat. My thinking was this...

They are growing on his yard, not mine. I'm not breaking the law, but he might be. If I want to keep coming back and picking more mushrooms, he'll probably want to know more about what they are. By bringing it up to him, I can gauge his reaction, and stand a better chance of him being open to me coming back to pick more.

If he's not open to it, then I wasn't going to be able to come back anyway.

A common trick I have seen is to carry around a small bag of empty cans with you, and simply tell others you were picking up cans. No matter what excuse you have, people generally don't like strangers on their property.

wow, that is actually excellent advice imo, except the hallucenogenic part. i definetely think that would work considering alot of the people around here are pretty laid back and peaceful. im defenitely gonna try the edible gourmet mushroom suggestion.

I understand the urge to rummage through people's mulched beds, but they do have a right to get pissed off at you. You are TRESSPASSING. And there are plenty of mushrooms growing in public areas. :thumbup: So try to avoid tresspapsing.

That said, I have also found (and retrieved) patches in people's yards. Just be carefull and be respectfull, because these people are probably already going to be on the defensive.

Trespassing for mushrooms gets people in trouble sometimes. So trespassing should be avoided.

A good companion for hunting edible mushrooms with, is a dog. :mushroom2: :stoned:

I would not advise going up to people's yards just because it looks like a good habitat. It's just not nice. You have to realize your boundaries and respect others property rights. They DO pay taxes...

We must be respectful or people will get angry at mushroom pickers. It's hard enough to find the little buggers! We don't need to attract anymore attention than necessary

Please respect people's property rights and don't litter in public areas that are home to our beloved patches...

Pack it in, pack it out and tread lightly...

If they are growing so much in the yards around you then they must be in other public places as-well, I would imagine that some of those people are aware of what it is and pick them too. So just be careful and respect every one.

Ive used the old "mycology Student" line many times, and here in canada all i get are smiles... plus i have a phony myclology buisness card with mushroom johns website on it... but it doesent help that im a youthfull person, but at least i have a kwantlen colledge student card to back it up with.... sometimes i tell them i live in the area and i white lie to them and tell them that these are poisinous and must be eradicated....

which is not far from the truth cuz ALL IVE FOUND THIS YEAR ARE NOTHING BUT GALERINAS. im shocked there arent more poisinings this year....

damn galerinas!

i've gotten some dubious looks when i've used lines like that but it usualy only takes a min or two of my talking for people to see that i am a serious student, if only in my spare time and that the mushrooms are my passion. as long as i'm not spouting off about my spiritual views, the generaly take it at face value and think nothing ill of my interest.
