I cased some GT cakes about a week ago. I used verm and soil as the top casing layer. they show no signs of colonisation, are they dead or doesnt the myc like the soil? the soil is 60% peat moss, and the ph was 5,5 - 6,5 before I added some lime should I wait or remove the casing layer and case them with straight verm?

I think thats fine. I have had AWESOME results with cactus soil, Schultz brand. I cased my hawaiian's with about a 1/2 in of it yesterday and already this morning I am seeing mycelial growth on some places of the surface (going to cover those up though). But I think you should be fine, maybe just give it a little more time before you stress about it. Best of luck.

like he said, its probably just a little slow...but if not it might be temperature or bacterial contamination (which would be very obvious).

Yeah I didn't think about temp or bacterial problems. That could be the case. But just be patient and see what happens over the next couple of days.

No its not sandy or anything. Some cactus soils are sandy I'm sure but Schultz brand looks and smells just like any other potting soil but its formulated and intended for cacti. It just has diferent organics in it. I'm not sure exactly what's different about it, but it works really good. I forget where I read about using it but It said that mushies love the stuff. So I fugured what the hell, I'll try it. I am currently using it for the first time for my hawaiian casings. I didn't do anything special to it. I just added a little verm. I cased the substrate yesterday and this morning the mycelium had already began to come through the surface. I covered the spots up with a little more soil. I was a little dumb founded by the idea myself but it seems to be doing very well. I'll keep you posted on the results.

I'd also be interested in hearing about your experiences using Shultz brand cactus soil. My friend actually just picked some up from Wallmart today - I think he heard someone (maybe you) talk about it before. He added some vermiculite and sterlized a quart jar of it. He's going to use it to case two 8x8 trays. A few more are going to be something roughly like the 50/50+ tek.
Question: If I'm using hydrated lime in my 50/50+ mix, would it cause a problem if I added a little too much? How sensitive is the ratio?
