mushrooms are growing SOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOW UPDATED w/ PICS!
    #6243635 - 11/03/06 01:09 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Alright I made a thread 3 or 4 days ago about my mushrooms being really small, well since then I have spotted quite a few more primordia/pins, but they are growing so damn slow. Like an 1/8 inch a day maybe, if that.. I've cut down my fanning to about four times a day to keep them more moist like peoples were tellin me, and they are all in perlite FCs, with the right temps.... what the hell is wrong? I thought mushrooms grew really fast once the pins popped out?

also, what have you all noticed? Do mushies do more growin in the dark, with the light on, or the same amount all the time regardless of light?

should be good, I'm using moistened perlite with no standing water, so according to what I've read it should be around 98%. I have a hygrometer but it's a piece of shit so I don't go by it anymore.

So basically, I don't know, but it feels fuckin humid inside when I open it.

my guess would be moisture content, temp, or humidity.  respectively, in order of most likely to least likely.  i had that same prob with my casings.  after dunking them they started growing alot faster and alot bigger.

Easy fix for the humidity is to just add water very slowly to your perlite till you have .5 to 1 cm of standing water under it.  my perlite dried out very fast using the colander method.  keep the fannings about 3 a day.  and try to keep the temp inside your actual fruiting chamber about 75.  i also noticed my temps inside my FC were about 5 degrees cooler then outside of it(perhaps from using cold water in my perlite?)

As for water content, bout all ya can do is wait till it finishes the flush and dunk.

good luck, hehe and BTW Spearhead rocks man

substrate: BRF/VERM

Condensation on walls: YES

Does Spearhead rock: YOU KNOW IT

I may try and add a bit of water to the perlite, I dunno about standing water though RR advised against that, I think I'll just take the cakes out and empty a spray bottle on the surface of the perlite... I dunno if that's it though, the perlite looks wet enough.

How fast should the mushrooms be growing? Like a couple of inches a day right?

yeah that's what I'm sayin! I need that kinda growth man!

And I know BRF isn't the best sub. to use, but this is my first grow and it's portrayed as bein the easiest way to do this shit so that's what I went with.. my point is though, I've seen pics of peoples cakes puttin out monster fruits.. maybe not as monsterish as with poo or rye or anything else, but come on, they should be doing a lil better than they are... I'm not willing to accept the substrate as a scapegoat reason for the slow growth. I know it can be done faster with BRF/Verm.

Also, I added a tiny amount of standing water (by accidentaly spraying the shit out of the perlite) to one FC, we'll see what happens!

I've been reading RH should be dropped a bit once fruits appear? Can anybody verify this for me? I could put the ones with pins into my PMP where the RH should be a bit less

Hmm, it sounds like you're doin everything perfectly right to me. you're growin exactly how I am. I birthed 5 cakes beside my casing and so far I only have a few pussy pins. Maybe you should try to case alittle next time?

Leave your humidity high. After the flush, dunk your cakes for 24 hours to rehydrate them. It sounds like they just dried out during colonization is all. Your perlite will hold up well. I have a terrarium with three inches of damp, but not wet perlite and it's been well over a month without adding moisture to it.

If your cakes are really dry, you can use a syringe to inject a bit of water into them. Rinse the syringe well, but it doesn't need to be sterile.

I don't think it's really a matter of dropping the RH but you just have to make sure there is no standing water on your pins/fruitbodies. If that's not a problem, I don't see why you would need to decrease the RH.

I've had the same problem, dunked like RR said, and the second flush was back to normal.  Disappointing to come home from work and see your pins are still pins day after day =[.  Haven't tried injecting though.

PS.  Props for having MF Doom lyrics in your sig .

i wouldnt cut down on your FAE, like rogerrabbit said, keep humidity high. and also, shrooms arent going to grow a certain amount each day. its rather exponetial. small shrooms will grow slow, large shrooms will grow fast. ya know. some are girrafes, some are hippos.

If theres one thing I've kind of learned from this project it's that patience really is a virtue! I'm still in the learning process though ya know? Anyways, they are definitely growing, so I'm just not gonna worry about it too much, I'm happy to see any fruits at all, I was getting really worried I had really messed up about 5 days ago, then BAM... my first pin!  I just spotted another cake that is all knotted up and ready to put out some burly pins.. looks like I'm gonna see 30 of em tomorrow night so I'm totally happy!  Thanks for the input everybody.... I'll get you all some pics tomorrow and update this thread then...

Peace and

edit: an you know Doom is the shit! haha
