Re: Tao Te Ching and Yoga [Re: soulcircus]

Yoga means "yoking ourselves back to the divine" or unification with God. Yoga actually contains a number of different systems, each with this purpose in mind. For example, Jnana Yoga is the practice of trying to approach god with rigorous philosophical contemplation. Bhakti Yoga has to do with unificaton with God through devotional service and adoration, etc etc... they are all methods for eventual unification with God, one way or the other.

The philosophy of Tao is one of harmonization with an essential source or power. In this sense, the two disciplines are the same, in the sense that they are both a way for the human individual to merge or connect with the sacred supernatural.

The main differances are the methodologies. However, most Yogi's conceive the Supreme in personalized, theistic terms (as a god complete with personality) whereas Taoist conceive of God in his impersonal form, or as void.

I agree with most of what you say about Yoga, but 'most' Yoga in fact does not dwell upon theistic God. Yoga philosophy includes 'Isvara,' a personal Lord, and this inclusion is of paramount importance in Bhakti Yogas like that practiced by the Hare Krishna movement, but also by Kundalini schools in which songs are sung to the Divine Mother as Kundalini-Shakti.

Hindu thought and Yoga in particular is wise enough to recognize God-with-attributes and God-without-attributes - Saguna Brahman and Nirguna Brahman respectively. Buddhism acknowledges the latter aspect in it impersonal language, and the West sometimes sees these differences as 'God' and 'Godhead' respectively among mystics like Dionysus the Areopagite or Meister Eckhart.
