Inmates use bike repair workshop to smuggle contraband into prison
DRUGS and mobile phones are being smuggled into jail in discarded bicycles.
Sources yesterday claimed a repair workshop at Shotts prison had become the centre of a contraband racket.
The workshop is used to repair and spruce up bikes sent in by Edinburgh charity The Bike Station.
Inmates at the Lanarkshire prison get them roadworthy before they are sent back to the organisation.
However, cons say prisoners - without the charity's knowledge - are arranging for contacts on the outside to pack banned items on to the bikes before they hand them in to be fixed.
One insider said: "They use just about any kind of bike - BMXs, children's bikes, whatever. They have been getting their mates to hand bikes in as unwanted, but the con is made aware of what bike it is and a phone or drugs is concealed on it.
"For example, if you wrap a phone in a wee bag, it can be concealed in the wheel by bursting the tyre and sticking it in beside the inner tube. It looks just like a flat tyre."
Our source said the bike workshop, staffed by 10 prisoners, had been operating for nine months.
He added: "The cons have been taking the bikes and doing them up.
"Around three months ago, someone asked what would happen if they got a mate to hand a bike in.
"They tried once to smuggle in a phone and it worked. Now this method is being used to bring in phones and hash and valium."
Prisoners have been turning to ingenious methods of smuggling drugs into Scotland's jails.
There have been attempts to throw footballs, tennis balls and even dead rabbits and seagulls with drugs stashed in them into prison grounds.
Drugs have also been smuggled inside lawyers' envelopes, taking advantage of a loophole that stops prison officers opening mail to cons from their lawyers.
But mobile phones are rivalling drugs as the most sought-after contraband in some prisons.
The shrinking size of handsets makes it easier to smuggle them in.
One prison worker said mobile phones were coming into jails a piece at a time before being reassembled.
He said: "Somebody will send in the battery, then somebody else will bring in the SIM card, someone will bring in the front face and somebody will bring in the back face.
"However, if you are concealing it in a bike, it is possible you could push your luck and send the whole phone in one go."
But he added that bikes sent to Shotts were chosen at random and one loaded with contraband might not end up inside the jail.
It is understood an exhaustive search of the latest batch to be delivered from the charity failed to turn up any banned items.
The Scottish Prison Service said yesterday they had no concrete evidence the scam was in operation.
They disputed claims that inmates had been caught with mobile phones smuggled in on the bikes.
A spokesman said: "The SPS take seriously all suggestions of the introduction of unauthorised articles into prisons and we would review any information received."
Ian Maxwell is treasurer of The Bike Station charity, who supply the renovated bikes to groups such as the long-term unemployed and those with mental health problems.
He said: "This has been a very successful project with Shotts prison.
"The end result is that bikes are getting back to families who can benefit from them, and prisoners are learning useful skills.
"We will work hard with the prison authorities to ensure any possibility of smuggling is closed off completely."

My mom used to give her sister's husband birthday cards with a hit of acid dropped onto each letter of her signature.

lol. that makes me laugh. imagine an inmate in his little 8 x 1O foot cell with nothing but bare walls, a mattress and a toilet just tripping balls....
i mean seriously, you gotta laugh...that's funny shit.....
my question is...why?
to get a really deep realization that you are in fact in prison? that would suck i think.
