A former prison guard has admitted to smuggling heroin into the privately-run jail where he worked.
Kevin Coulter brought drugs into HMP Addiewell in West Lothian amid claims that his family had been threatened.
Coulter was eventually snared by bosses and they seized heroin with a potential value of £32,100.
The 29-year-old - who also worked as a part-time fireman - could now face prison himself after he admitted being concerned in the supply of the Class A drug.
Prison management received information on July 26, 2010, that Coulter had been smuggling drugs. The married father-of-two told a boss that day that he was resigning blaming "inconvenient shifts".
He was later quizzed about his reasons for leaving and confronted with a claim that he had been dealing drugs.
Prosecutor Laura Thomson told the High Court in Glasgow that Coulter appeared "nervous", but initially denied the allegation.
She added: "However, after some time he volunteered that his wife, mother and family had been threatened and he admitted that he had previously brought drugs in for a prisoner.
"When a specific allegation that he had brought a package in the previous week (was put to him), he began to cry and admitted that he had done so."
Bosses then asked whether Coulter, of Bathgate, West Lothian, had any drugs on him at that time.
He removed a bag from his trousers that contained heroin which could be sold for up £32,100.
Miss Thomson said: "He explained that he had met two males at an industrial estate who handed him a package through his (car) window and also threw money in.
"They said: 'There's your wages'. This money was found still in his car."
Coulter later told police that he had brought the package that was seized after "weeks of pressure and threats".
He had met the two men at the industrial estate on July 21 before delivering some of the drugs to an inmate the next day leaving the remainder in his vehicle.
Miss Thomson told the court: "On July 26, he handed in his notice, but the prisoner in question persistently demanded delivery of the remaining drugs.
"He made excuses as to why he was unable to bring them in. He collected them from his car, but was confronted by senior colleagues as he returned to the prison."
Coulter also said the prisoner had knowledge of where he and relatives lived.
Ronnie Renucci, defending, said Coulter was once a part-time firefighter and now works as a driving instructor since leaving Addiewell.
Judge Lord Woolman continued bail and deferred sentencing until February 25 at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Addiewell has been dogged by controversy since it opened in 2008.
A report has claimed almost a third of inmates released from the prison test positive for illegal drugs.
And a large riot among inmates in January 2010 left two guards injured.
