fourm software

Why not switch to a different fourm software on the new server? Id suggest the software that overgrow is using, vBulletin. It costs less then ubb, and seems to work better. It also uses mySQL and PHP so your server configuration wont be any diffferent really, other then a few MINOR changes, suess can verify that. So everyone will lose their posts.. not really, since you still own a lisence to ubb, you could keep the eintire ubb fourm and just make it an archive. The first few weeks might be hectic with everyone scrambling for their nicks back, but i dont think there should be that big of a problem.

We will be upgrading to version 6 of UBBThreads (a major upgrade). I'm pretty sure vBulletin costs more than UBBThreads because we were license holders before it was bought by Infopop, so we pay a reduced rate for license renewals.

Since Infopop bought wwwthreads, there has been a great deal of changes made to this BB... I like the direction its heading in. I think changing the BB again maybe too much right now, lets think about it again later down the road and see what the next few versions of this BB do...

While I'm sure better software can be found.... The software that runs The Shroomery is one of the major reasons that I come here. Sure it gets bogged down sometimes, but it runs the rags off of most other forum software that I have seen.

> Sure it gets bogged down sometimes The board was written to work with both MySQL and Postgres to avoid the MySQL commercial licencing. In doing so, the SQL in the code has not been optimized. There are a lot of places that the authors could have done a single select with several natural left joins, but instead had to do multiple selects to stay portable between databases. There are also a few places in the code that the authors choose to do a "filter" operation at display time rather than post time. This results in the most "up to date filters" being applied per view, but also results in a lot of extra processing (each display as opposed to once for the post). > it runs the rags off of most other forum software that I have seen I agree with you 100% there. I think it would be a very bad idea to change to any other board software that doesn't maintain the look and feel and posts of the current system. Once the new server is in place a lot of the bogging down should go away, depending upon the current load during peak, memory usage, etc. There are also serveral options that 'root' can set to tune php, mysql and apache to work a bit more efficiently. There really isn't much in ubbthreads that can be changed to help speed things up without loosing the database portability stuff. If the system were written for MySQL only, it would probably be about a 25% speedup based on the quick look I took at the code (I could be off a bit here). Depending upon the server location and availability, etc, you can run MySQL on one machine and the web server on another reducing the CPU load but increasing the IO load.

Version 6 of UBBThreads has been heavily optimized for MySQL. If you have access to the member area, a beta release of V6 is out.

UBB is the bomb. I like it the best. Ikonboards are cool too but UBB is heads and tails above it. I don't like the overgrow boards at all. -Boxtop
