Golden chanterelle's!
    #6156024 - 10/10/06 08:43 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I went out on a hunt today and found some chanterelle's, at-least I think they are? Can any one help me to confirm these?

Could you get a closeup of the gills? Do you have a macro feature on your camera?

Also, would you describe the color of them, as well as the scent?

I don't think they are chanterellles, the gills aren't right, and the color (although this could be due to the quality of the photographs) appears off.

I've only really found Chants once, so I don't speak from a lot of first hand experience. There are quite a few knowledgable edible hunters on this board so they could steer you in a better direction.

Yeah, just saw your new pics, and I'm pretty, if not definatley sure those aren't Chants. I'd wait for a second opinion, but don't get your hopes up.

If they are a Chanterelle then they are Cantharellus subalbidus. It seems as though they have the yellow staining action of that species. Did they start off white and then bruise yellow? If so then that narrows it down quite a bit.

Anyway if it isn't a chanterelle then it is some species of clitocybe.

That's what I figured they are better then the Canatharellus Cinnabarius in my opinion.

Cantharellus subalbidus: The White Chanterelle I'd say. Did they bruise browny orangy?

Yes, when I first found them they were white and after being washed and put in the fridge for 2 hours they started truing golden brown.

They do have a fruity apricot smell to them.

Never seen those white ones before. But you can tell from the false gills that they are Cantharellus. Nice finds.

No shit....learn something New everyday. Thought those gills were a dead give away that they weren't going to be edible.

Cool.

Note how the 'gills' fork. Forked gills is a distinctive characteristic of chanterelles.

I think I read the white ones are kind of specific to the west coast.
