Naphtha and Acid
    #6116584 -

I have two questions. The first, is rosenol(SP) Naptha a suitable brand for perfroming an extraction?

Second, Can Sodium bisulfate(PH Down in pool stores) be used as a suitable substitute for Muriatic acid.

Thanks for your help.

If you distil your own naphta, just about any brand is OK and in fact better than most brands which are said to be OK.

In some extractions it can, but if you heat dry sodium bisulfate with dry salt, the dangerous hydrogen chloride gas will be formed which rapidly dissolves into water, forming muriatic acid which, again, is better than the hardware store variety.

In a simpler way you can dissolve the bisulfate in water, add the salt in the correct proportions, and muriatic acid will form on the spot. This will contain lots of neutral sodium sulfate, which is no problem if you need the acid as an intermediary step of many extractions.

But this requires studying up and acquiring some skills.

Thanks for the quick reply. I took chemistry in highschool but I don't want to botch up the extraction, I'll just buy some muriatic acid online, but I'm gonna hang on too the bisulfate so I can experiemnt with it later.

Why would you buy it online?

I can't find it anywhere. I went to a pool store today but all they had was PH Down.

I've heard rosenol(SP)leaves a hideous residue.  Sodium Carbonate (pH Up) can be used to wash off remaining Lye before freeze precipitating.  I'd bet most larger home improvement stores carry the Sunnyside line of products you should be using to clean and paint the area where you'll be doing the extraction

Fuck, fuck, fuck. I bought it because it was actually pictured in the tek I was going to follow. I'll have to evaporate some myself to find just to make sure.

EDIT: Okay I googled the shit out of rosonol and it from the articles I've read it seems to be a pretty pure naphtha product.

Now to convert the sodium bisulfate into Muriatic Acid, all I have to do is heat it in water? Will the left over sodium sulfate cause a problem during the extraction, if so, how can I remove it? The only step I'm going to need the acid in is the int ital extraction from the plant material.

I've heard people say the acidifying step isn't even necessary.

From my experience VM&P Naphtha is the way to go. Supposedly much cleaner than lighter fluids. People usually use it right outta' the container. It can be found at nearly any hardware store.

VM&P stands for Varnish Makers & Painters Naphtha.

Yea I was looking for this brand but couldn't find it at home depot or menards, so I just bought rosonol, which is suppose to be one of the cleanest of lighter fuel naphthas.

Actually, VM&P is not the brand but the type. It could be any brand-name but still be VM&P Naphtha. Just make sure it has VM&P or Varnish Makers & Painters Naphtha on the label some where.
