Half Gallon Cake! Could this work?
    #611995 - 04/18/02 03:49 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, the tick on my neighbor's dog's ass had this big idea.
Pasturize some straw and pack a half gallon ziplock baggie
full of it, then spawn it with some finch seed, and let it grow
into one big half gallon cake. Punch some holes in the baggie
with the syringe for a little air exchange. Then birth it as one
big cake, and keep it on a grated shelf in the terrarium so
that little ones can grow off the bottom if they want to.
So what do you think? Would it work or should I stop listening
to ticks?
OK, I asked for it, flame away, and don't hold back. I have to
leave for now but, I'll be back.

congradulations, in about six months to a year, you'll have a fully colonized bag.
hey, just kids. make sure to post your results, even if you get a failure.

Not bad huh? Yeah it was a loaded question, but did we

I've been making cakes that are approx 1\2 gallon for a while now. I use birdseed and traditional brf substrates in a big round pyrex dish (fits my PC exactly). I haven't let one flush as a cake yet; i've always cased, but I think I'll try the cake+dunk soon. So, yeah, as your pics have shown, big cakes definately work! Next time I got one colonized, I'll post a pic.
size does(n't) matter.. ?

Thanks guy's for the replies. Yeah it's been a rough couple
of weeks, but I'm back.
The tick gave me the idea for the bale but I wasn't really sure
what I would do with it. Then Silvyr (pretty smart girl) said it
would be cool to see how it did as a cake. And of course she
was right.
The time frame: about two weeks, I think. I wish I would have
written it down.
The strain: Well they are second generation Cambodian that I
got from my ole buddy Roadkill.
And an update, remember the "drytek" jars I did? Well the first
four jars were cased in a half gallon juice box. 2" damp verm,
4" substrate, 1"damp verm on top. Here's a pic:

Not bad for about three weeks after being spores huh?
Both projects are kicking out some pretty spore prints so
if anyone is interested in them, Ralph will have em for a
buck shortly at the Free Spore Ring .
Later folks!

you must have an extremely clean environment. From the little bit of experience it seems that when I pack substrates that thich, if conditions allow, they will flush forever.
Whereas if I get my casings contammed on 2nd flush or so Its all lost. So in general I have tried to decrease the size of my casings so as not to put too many eggs in one basket.
I have just recently got a cat in the house, and between her and her litter box, I don;t think thats helping things at all.

Actually I have a pit bull in the house. But he is house trained
and is bathed regularly, and my wife is a clean freak. She's
meaner than the pit and I about got my ass kicked when I
condemed the double broiler to straw and shit duty only.
But a cat is a different matter. I've cleaned the evoporator
coils on a lot of air conditioners and you'd be surprised how
much  fuzz makes it by the filter. The absolute nastiest
thing you can have living in a house is a damn bird. Somehow
those ass feathers carry birdshit to the coils and the acid in it
eats up the aluminium. And washing that stuff out makes for
a  long nasty mess for the HVAC repair man.

You know, I have used a tek similar to that 1/2 gal bag tek. What I do is this: I use straw and worm castings. Combining these together and then innoculating with some millet spawn. Just one pint size. I then mix all this together in a bin and set it wrapped up in a sleeping bag for a week. Then I just start exchanging the air and give it natural ambient light (i put it under my window). This gives me a full ounce flush (dried) and repeats flushes (shrinks to about a half dried) about 3 or times. If anyone wants exact steps, I can give them to you. Just my 2 cents, not intended to knock anyones existing teks... its just what I do.

glad to see that i'm not the only one still hooked on worm castings. in case you didnt see the growlog, i've found that you can pasteurize in a crock pot. it makes your yield about 1.5 to 2 time more. i use 60% worm poo, 20% straw, and 20% vermicultie and spawn with 1 pint of colonized birdseed. i case 50/50+.
