yellow after 11 days of incubating?
    #6095487 -

Is this contamination? Is this normal for some of the rice that wasn't ground up completely to turn yellow? Also...the first pic I believe IS contam....see the brown towards the bottom of the jar?

TIA!

looks like mold to me.

hey, maybe you can have the pics on top of one another,
not side by side.
that would really help.
just hit enter between them.

anyway, looks like mold to me.

not a sterile inoculation practice.
or maybe a contaminated syringe.
probably the former.

that foil is a bad idea too.
foil should be removed immediately upon removal from the pc.

damn!  Ok...thanks for the info...and next time I won't use foil, I finally got micropore tape

I also have a glove box, incubater and growing chamber coming to me on Wed.  That will produce a more sterile inviroment.  This is my first batch...

Thanks again!

don't use micropore tape either.

if you are doing the PF style substrate, then you should have a layer of

DRY VERMICULITE on the top of the substrate.
this is your filter.
covering the holes only makes things worse.

so toss those jars and start new ones.
do not open them unless you pc them again first.
and then open them outside.
or you can just toss them and get new ones cheap.

so how about changing the pictures?

tape is to be used with grains.
or you can use tyvek, or poly-fil, or filter discs.

for the pf method, dry vermiculite is the way it's done.
adding tape is adding a second filter.
one that slows down the gas exchange,
and slows down colonization.

whomever told you to add tape on top of a dry vermiculite layer
is being over cautious in my opinion and suffering for it.

but I see you have a poll going on, so you should find your answer there.

Yeah...I got my answers

I am going to go with NO tape and dry verm layer(already did that though too)

Thanks for sharing your incredible knowledge with me. I will take ALL the advice I can get.

It looks like bacterial contamination to me. Leave the tape off pf jars. Tape AND a verm barrier is going to make it hard to get gas exchange. Use foil during the PC cycle, then remove it when the jars come out.
