Help bringing cactus inside for the cold season...

Hey y'all! This is the first year I have planted my Pedros outside in garden soil. They grew quite well, but I live in the Appalachian Mountains, and it will soon be too cold for them. Last year I gradually acclimated my cacti in pots by moving the pots in or out of the house. How shall I do these soil-planted ones? Should I just repot them
into pots and do the gradual in/out thing? Small or big pot? The cactus are about 12 inches tall, not too big really. Any experience in this?

i would just pop them into big pots and bring them in, they arent going to die

You say you've planted them outside in garden soil. Can I ask why if you knew winter would be too cold for them? as I would've thought you'd know you'd need to dig them back up & take indoors or leave them & chance to luck.

Whatever you do I would avoid planting cacti in the ground only to have to dig them up in the winter as you'll almost certainly damage the roots and slow the cactus' growth (not to mention a lot of hassle & risk of damaging the cactus).

One other thought, what I've seen some people here do with outdoors tropical plants is to wrap them in bubblewrap/foam wrap in wintertime to mitigate the effects of the cold. This may be an option.

just how cold are your winters?

still, i would dig em up and put them into large pots.....

maybe try a bit of an experiment on a couple?  cut a few of them off, leaving a few inches on the root. then build a little cold-frame to place on top of the outdoor ones.

maybe you'll get lucky :shrug:

I planted them in the ground to see if they would grow bigger or faster than the ones planted in pots. There was not much of a difference, though, so I probably won't do that again.
It gets kinda cold here, the average winter low is 42 F, but it can get down to the teens a couple times. Probably too cold for Pedro. But I might try a cold frame on one just for kicks...

Sorry, this is unrelated.  I just wanted to comment that your middle signature pic is a Mr. Bungle song. :grin:  Maybe you knew that.  Or maybe it's just a more popular phrase than I realized.
