Dubious compound

it is dangerous to be right in matters on which the established authorities are wrong.
A penalty for possession of a drug/plant should not be more damaging than the drug/plant itself.

steven king's "It", "The Shining"

all those blood and gore "horror" movies aren't scary. I went in to see "the hills have eyes" expecting a horror, finding it to be a comedy. Same with "hostel".

fuck hostel

the HHH was pretty intense compared to the shit that comes out today: the grudge, house of wax, see no evil

It and Shining are awesome too

anyone seen stephen kings 'desperation'? it's pretty intense.
i enjoyed the hills have eyes, and the descent (except for the ending which was rather unsatisfying).
saw was classic, and i really liked house of a thousand corpses.
anyone ever seen 'cube'? cheesy low budget horror flick, but i found it very entertaining.

I'm compling a list of movies I need to watch.

Here's my list so far.
GENERAL HORROR:
Friday the 13th collection [the ultimate slasher series; not the originator and not the most creative, but definitely the most satisfying]
House/House 2 [I remember these as being worth watching, but a little bizarre.]
The Hills Have Eyes (original) [Wes Craven's finest work, IMO.  Top notch]
13 Ghosts (original)
Angry Red Planet
Basket Case [cool movie, fun premise]
Blood Feast
Army of Darkness [Essential, but only after you've seen Evil Dead 2]
Bubba Ho-Tep (Apparently Bruce Campbell is the man) [Yup! Also, watch out for 'Bubba Nosferatu' this year or next as well]
Cabin Fever [rubbish, don't waste your time]
Creepshow [cool trio of short stories, made when Stephen King still translated well to film]
Final Stab
The Frightening
Leeches [brilliant 80's campiness; you'll love it]
Wolves on Wall Street [if you want werewolves, look into 'An American Werewolf in London', 'the Howling' or 'Ginger Snaps']
Nightmare Sisters
Evil Spawn
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers []
Re-Animator (I've been meaning to find out why "Birth is always painful") [Re-animator is what really turned me on to horror.  This is a premium film.]
Sleepaway Camp (box set) [YES.  The end makes it worthwhile.]
Plan 9 From Outer Space (I think this was voted the worst movie ever made) [It is probably the worst, but it's so much fun to watch.  Marvel in it's atrocity.  Also, consider watching Tim Burton's biopic 'Ed Wood' about Plan 9's creator.]
Miner's Massacre
Night of the Living Dead (I saw it once but I'd like to see it again) [Classic movie, and so important for what it did, but there are better; Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, and my favorite: Zombie II]
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original) [Great film; it's effectively scary without a lot of onscreen blood and gore]
The Hand / I Bury the Living
The Others (not so much horror)  [indeed not horror, but a pretty cool one regardless]

TROMA:
Tromeo and Juliet
The Toxic Avenger
Citizen Toxie
Terror Firmer
Killer Condom [Dude, hilarious movie.  I can't say enough about it]
Surf Nazis Must Die
Stuff Stephanie in the Incinerator
Scream Baby, Scream
Fertilize the Blaspheming Bombshell
Horror of the Hungry Humongous Hungan
Video Demons do Psychotown
Croaked: Frog Monster from Hell

FOREIGN:
Ring
Ring 2
Ring 0
Demoniacs
Opera
Suspiria (Looking forward to this one)
Deep Red (VHS. but an essential)
Tenebre (VHS, but an essential)
Sleepless City of the Living Dead
The Blind Dead Collection
Dead Alive
Bad Taste

Any suggestions?
I'm looking in your direction MrJellineck and Randolph Carter

I commented on the general films I'd seen in red.  I'm not familiar with any of the 'Troma' movies.  I've seen a few toxic avenger flix years ago, but don't remember much.  You've got some of the most important foriegn movies listed; good call with those.  Except for that Ring bullshit; I hated those movies.

I would also recommend:

Fright Night
High Tension
Zombie II
Undead
Shadow of the Vampire (not horror, but horror-related and very cool)
Motel Hell
Of all of Romero's films, I prefer Day of the Dead.  It's gives the zombies a human element and the movie is ultimately an anti-military statement.
Phenomena

Many others.  I'll post them as they come to me.
