Let's discuss Indie Pop.

Well... I've found myself liking just about any song in the 'Indie Pop/Brit Pop' genre. The thing is, i don't really know what the 'Indie Pop' or 'Brit Pop' sound is. It all started with Radiohead. I love that band. Moreso the earlier albums (Pablo Honey, The Bends, OK Computer...) than the later ones. A few of my friends who are avid indie pop/rock and brit pop listeners are trying to get me interested in the scene. Here's what I could find out on Audiogalaxy... maybe not the best place for genre descriptions, maybe so: "Indie Rock refers to a scene maintained by all the Alternative bands who remained underground and on independent labels in the wake of Nirvana?s success and the widespread commercial co-opting of Alternative music. Though there is no particular Indie Rock sound, it is typically guitar-based and made with a Punk-inspired Do-It-Yourself (DIY) aesthetic." "Indie Pop embraces the basic tenets of Pop songwriting but filters them through the warped sensibilities of Indie Rock. The result is ear candy that is smarter, more experimental, and more emotionally realistic than the typical dross on the radio, and Indie music that is softer and gentler than most "Indie Rock." " lets discuss this, like on that show on tv where they discuss things.

Britpop is all different than regular indie pop stuff. Suede invented it, I think. Or The Smiths. Maybe it was The Smiths. Or even XTC. But I'm not even sure XTC is from England. But there was Suede. Then all those other bands. Blur. The Boo Radleys. I'm not sure who else. Ocean Colour Scene. Manic Street Preachers. Oasis. That's all I know about Britpop, I think. I don't think it's very good. But indie pop could be anything. It's just the young kids playing the pop music. The old style of pop music. Like Sloan. With shimmery guitars and all the voice harmony stuff. Or the New Pornographers. Or Ben Folds Five. I'm not sure. The Weakerthans. Matthew Sweet. They play pop music. They're the main ones I could think of that people know. The ones. I don't like those ones. They're the indie-rocky ones. There are more poppier too. They sound like- I'm not sure. But poppy. The But, like, The Cardigans. Belle and Sebastian. The Pastels. The Softies. There's Stereolab type too. That kind. They're pure pop. Pure pop sounds. But with analog synthesizers and stuff! And Yo La Tengo. It's really sweet-sounding and nice, Yo La Tengo. Listen to Yo La Tengo. And Air. And Flying Saucer Attack. And, see, like, the Ramones! The Ramones were just playing pop too. You know? They were all influenced by girl-groups and stuff. Listen to I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend. And there's lots like that. That's all three-chords and silly. Listen to Cub. And Talulah Gosh. Shonen Knife, I guess. All that. And there are ones that are all the opposite of that with strings and stuff that are about Brian Wilson and Pet Sounds or something. Like Rufus Wainwright, I guess. And Belle and Sebastian a bit, I guess. They have strings and horns. And. . I can't think of anymore. I can't think of anything else. Okay?

I am a musician (Bass & Guitar) and I am in a "indie" pop band from ATL, GA called OSKAR BALDWIN. Indie, if you want to think of it characteristicly of a genre, you have it on the dot. A lot of such music I loathe, blaming the product on simply bad taste. The records often sound anemic at best and stike me as well-polished fallouts of the rock-star era. My favorite bands right now are Built to Spill and Modest Mouse, but even their lastest releases aren't up-to-par. Check out Built to Spill's "Perfect from Now On," and consider yourself enlightened! BTS--- The most underrated band in the World!!! It all began elswhere. Get stoned. Let it lead you somewhere else. Peace. PigInZen

Were Oasis ever big over in the states? They were and still are pretty much the biggest rock n' roll (or whatever) band in the UK. Definately Maybe was a great album...then Morning Glory was great too......then their other albums kinda sucked but now they're bringing out a new album which should be pretty good. I think there was supposed to be a point to this, but....meh.

Would Pavement qualify as indy-pop? I'm not a big fan or anything, I just figured they could be added to this list.

Oasis was big in the states for a while, but like everything else over here they were in one day and out the next.

Here is a list of the best brit pop albums as voted for by Q magazine. It's a good list, but I never listened to Blur....oasis is what is was about. Get the album Definately Maybe. Oh and definately check out their version of I Am The Walrus....quite a cover. http://www.q4music.com/buyersguides/DisplayList_EssentialDozens.cfm?ObjectUUID=A5A6C857-8CAD-11D4-98B80001023C7E0B
