Alice in wonderland discuss. subj. = cheshire cat
    #765594 - 07/21/02 08:10 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

I have lately become fasinated by the cheshire cat. It seems very symbolic to me. I will explain my point of view if you guys tell me what you think about the character first.

My view is that the cat is hiding. It symbolizes someone that is shy, sad, pissed, whatever and is hiding behind a smile. It feels as if it can disappear and noone can see hit with the "smile".

I think it?s obvious that the cat is fronting, it?s sinister, evil. Yet it can conciel itself and mislead you with it?s smile. I guess this is like how osama bin laden or hitler could have walked down the street before they did any dastardly deeds and no one would think differently... They certainly don?t look evil ...

The cheschire cat is my favorite character in Alice ... on top of that, I ALWAYS see cheschire cats on my trips. However, like the face above, their grins make me feel uneasy ... as if they were saying "I know something that you don't" or something along those lines. They are never happy on my trips, they only make my trips worse when they appear. But it is interesting how they follow me on every trip.

I don't think you can think for yourself. If you could you would have given us your interpretation first, why wait until everyone has stated theirs? Afraid aren't you

It is how the mind works..
Manipulating

I do not believe alice in wonderland is about drugs anyways, I think that is a bunch of fluff. If you read into it perhaps you will find that out too
so typical

""However, like the face above, their grins make me feel uneasy ... as if they were saying "I know something that you don't" ""

That's exactly what it is. Watch the movie. The cat is almost in a way...a guide. He gives subtle hints to her...Alice: "Which way should i go?" Cat:"Well that depends where you want to go." Alice:" Oh, it really doesn't matt..." Cat: "Well then, it doesn't really matter..which way you go"

He's basically telling her that she can and should pick her own path. And there's other subtle hints. The cat knows about the white rabbit(which is very symbolic)...although NO other creature in the movie knows or says anything about the white rabbit when alice asks.

The cat does know something she doesn't. He knows it's all a 'trip'. And he gives subtle clues of this(in the movie i mean).

how weird that you see that cat everytime you trip. That would soo freak me out! The cheschire cat is by far my most favorite char in the book/movie. When i went to disney world i even got some cheschire cat slippers, heh. To me,the cat is not trying to really trick or mislead alice or even guild her anywhere, but just trying to help her think for herself and not rely so much on the help of the others in wonderland. He does seem to know something that no one else knows (the smile) so i agree with the others who said that.

wow thats really weird, I often see the cheshire cat when I'm tripin too, I always just figured it was because he's my favorite disney type character....that and the fact that he always seems to pop up when i'm being particularly mischevious to lend a hand in whatever it is that I'm doing...he's my partner in crime....sneaky little bastard he is....yeah there is something about that cat....maybe I'll ask him what his deal is next time I see him and get back to you guys....

I have to agree with Hef on this one. That cat is the Tao, or "the Way!"

I am also grateful to Hef for single-handedly leading the sexual revolution, liberating us all from the repressed sexual mores of a puritanical nation, and for occasionally giving Norman Mailer a place to write...

PS: Also, thank you for Marilyn, Bettie, Janet, Barbi, Patti, and all the others!

Thanks alot, diddle. I love you too.

Anyway, I think the Cat symbolizes many things.
1) He is a spiritual guide for alice, as he appears and disappears at will, and is the only one that actually tries to help alice

2) Perhaps there is an evil quality to the cat. His smile says, I know something you don't. Plus his actions are quite the opposite of all of the other wonderland creatures, he is working against them (?) combine that with #1 and I would say that he could be compared to a demonic familiar.

3) The cat is all knowing. I am not sure what signifagance this has, but it seems to be the case. But he doesn't share his knowledge easily, only in a mocking fashion....

I especially like the part when alice says "I wish you would come and go so suddenly" and the cat responds by smiling and SLOWLY disappearing til only the smile remains....

thanks for your great responses.

I'd have to say I respectfully disagree with the assesment of the 'Guidance' aspect of the Chesire Cat, based on one of the first dialogues between the Cat & Alice:

A: "Cheshire-Puss, would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
CC: "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,"
A: "I don't care much where--"
CC: "Then it doesn't matter which way you go,"

This sets up the dynamic. Not for help, but more of taunting.
It will not help her, yet we are lead to asume it 's 'powers' allow it to show her a way out.

A Guide usually has the Wards best interest in mind. This cat is totally self absorbed, and its amused at her plight, rather than concerned. Much in the same way a young person may feel if a person is in trouble. Apathetic, as opposed to sympathetic. It appears and dissapears at will, much like a conscious does, or common sense in others. I have found no instance where the Cat actually helps her. It is, I believe , a figment of her Ego, as is the entire World through the Looking glass.

ok lets think aboot this...

A: "Cheshire-Puss, would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?"
CC: "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,"
A: "I don't care much where--"
CC: "Then it doesn't matter which way you go,"

I take this as the cat showing alice that she must know where she wants to go before she can go there. That is a differant kind of guidance...

But shortly after that, in a round about way, the cat guides alice to seek out the queen for a croquet game.

Wherever you go, there you are..

If you have nowhere to go, you can go anywhere.  (Do anything, etc..)

To me, the cat symbolizes the concept of "think outside the box", the school of thought that says the world in your mind is not like the world we know.  The grin is the bitter irony, the cat is fully aware that anything is possible and rules are useless, but smiles because it is impossible to express this to another.

Or, more symbolically, he is the embodiment of that thought occuring to Alice, supposing that all of what occurs in wonderland is actually in her mind.  He dissapears because she cannot quite grasp what he means.. but he returns, to leave again..

What a fantastic piece of literature.

While we're on the topic, is anyone else a fan of LC's other works?  My band does a really interesting song we call Jabberwocky..

They can all be interperted as 'right', that is why the Book endures.

BTW, i think its great that no matter what site you look through, the topic of drug use and corruption of the Youth seems to plague this book. I dont think they realise it was a political statement showing how utterly absurb British Politics were,  and not a pro-drug flick. Oh well, cant win them all.

Good thread LSR

Has anyone played the video game "Alice"? its really awesome the graphics are something else. In the game the cheshire cat is Alices guide. He lets her know what to do but in a round about way, much like the movie.
