Shroomo blanco ID, por favor?

Anyone have any idea of what these might be?




Habitat: Growing out of the ground, backyard/field

Gills: White

Stem: White with some brown streaks, hollow, annulus on 3 out of 4

Cap: Almost pure white, jagged perimeter on largest one, 1-3.5"

Spore Print: White

Bruising: None observed

Location: New York State

Looks like you may have Amanita virosa or similar species. A highly poisonous mushroom.

Lepiota species.......many are deadly...good job on the description..

I agree with lepiota as well. The base is un-amanita like. Plus, the ring is very substantial looking which leans towards lepiota rather than amanita. Finally that red streaking on the stem.

I just wanted to add that in further examination of these the largest one did actually appear to be fairly tan around the top of the cap. I'm not sure if this was a gradual change while it sat around or if it was just a difference in the lighting. In any case, I don't think that has any effect on the ID. I noticed that other Lepiota species appear to have similar colorations.

Those are Leucoagaricus naucina, formerly Lepiota naucina. Although they are listed as edible in most field guides they often cause severe gastrointestinal distress, so they should be considered poisonous.

Some specimens will bruise gray if you scratch the stem. Typically the color change takes a few minutes.


Evan, Amanita virosa and the other white Amanita species are sometimes mistaken for these, which is one of the other big reasons they aren't recommended for eating. There have been some unfortunate poisonings caused by these misidentifications. So they are similar enough to your suggestion to say that you didn't have a bad idea. In fact, the deadly Amanita species should be your first thought whenever you see any all white mushroom that look like these.
