I may be wrong but I believe Domo means thank you and domo arigatou means thank you very much but can be shortened to just arigatou. Like that Styx song.

From what I gather, there's several ways to thank someone.

There is a different phrase for thanking somebody in the way that a retail clerk would thank a customer. Arigatou Gozaimasu is how I would thank a social superior, such as our sensei.

I have no clue what Gozaimasu means in and of itself, but Ohayou Gozaimasu is "good morning".

Like I was told, the language isn't easy to wrap your head around.

Are you sure?
"Danke" is thank you in German, but it's prounounced donka.

Arigato gozaimashita would be even more polite.
Domo is just for friends.
Domo arigato is normal stuff.
Domo arigato gozaimashita is uber-polite.

I took a semester of german in high school, and that's certainly how my instructor pronounced "danke"

I lived in Switzerland for 3 years... It's pronounced "donka"
