Pink Floyd: Echoes, Covered in the studio. (by Todd&John)

First off, I think this is a pub worthy post. I know alot of you guys love pinkfloyd.
So yes, I didn't know what I was getting my self into when I embarked on the adventure of recreating my favorite song by pink Floyd. I almost gave up on it many times, just because it was so hard to get together with my friend and finish the main recordings. I took a little break from it and came back to finish it up. It took about 4months. Last night I listened to it all the way through for the first time (in the pitch dark) I was really, really happy with how it turned out. I put a TON of work into this, countless hours and many recording sessions that lasted till 6am. (lots of pot, coffee and cigarettes to get us through. I know its not perfect but we did our best with what we had.
NOTE: Its a huge mp3. 49MB. So just get ready to wait a min for the download. Its worth it, I promise. Weather you like pink floyd or not.. this is an interesting audio adventure. Its not a replica.
Instruments used: Guitar, bass, drum set, drum samples, many VST's, an organ, my own and my friends voice, Keyboards, djembe drums, didgeredoo, shakuachi, and many more random noises.(everything in my arsenal)
ENJOY!

well, not bad. the drums sound too... heavy (as in metalish) especially the kick drum in the beginning, the snare sounds a bit tight (as in tuning wise). work on harmonizing your voices a bit. maybe add a little more reverb on the organ, make it flow better, not so much attack. i liked the sounds a lot. not bad musicianship
overall i liked it. though i think if you are going to diverge from the original, go all the way.

well, I can respect that you finished your goal, and that you can play all of that, but I did not like it. Much of it sounded flat and dull to me, and the song itself is nothing of the sort.

thanks for both of the comments. I reuploaded it because some sample started playing when it shouldn't have.. so thats fixed. (I have no clue why I didn't hear it before I uploaded the first time.
As far as the track goes, I'm finished with it. The drums are half programed, and half played live (middle part). I did what I thought would sound good with the equipment I had. I know some people might get bothered by this "picking and choosing" of such a awesome song.. But what fun would it be if I made a carbon copy? Ive wanted to give this song a go ever since I first heard it while laying down in a park.

I liked it but I liked Pink Floyd's vocals better... I think you could make you vocals better w/ practice but I'm not sure they would ever fit as well as the original did.
That's the trouble w/ remaking someone else's work... if anything is even the slightest bit off it becomes really noticeable, but if it's your own song people will think that's how it's supposed to be

i totally agree... personally what bothered me the most was the lack of flow in certine parts, but there were some interesting stuff you've done (the talking part was nicely done but again it lacked the flow the original is so famuse for when it ended)
what i love most about Echoes is the way it builds up, there was this one time i was listening to it with two of my friends... we were stoned on the sofa just listening when this certine part came along and the three of us simply stood up at once it was THAT powerfull and one of the most memberable times with that song!
all in all an interesting listen

well, ends up being I'm not able to finish the recording now, but I'm hearing yours and I've got some friendly advice:
-Lots of things are out of tune, it's pretty important to check every instrument is tuned prior to each overdub. About the voices, well, I can't sing that song either so I can't say anything useful about that other than using an auto-tune solution
-Apply reverbs, delays and panning to create space, this is very important with music but specially with Pink Floyd's music. It's too muddy right now.
-It's got good energy, so take advantage of changes in rythm.
-Some parts are distorted, a good limiting program will fix that and make it louder without getting it to clip.
-Take more care about each individual instrument's sound. The song it's the sum of its parts, always remember that.
Hope that helps out a little
