Any advice for starting an Ethnobotanical garden?
    #591407 - 03/27/02 11:52 PM (19 years, 6 months ago)

I want to grow a few psychedelic plants in my garden but I'm pretty new to ethnobotanical gardening. Can anyone recommend a few plants to start out with? I don't mind if they take a bit of looking after, I quite enjoy gardening, I'm just not too sure what I should grow.
I'm in Australia, so anything that I can buy from www.shaman-australis.com would be a good start.

Hi,

Well it depends on your climate. If you are in the humid south of the continent, then you should search for plants that like it humid, and If you are in the dry regions of the continent...
And of course it depends on your taste

I would plant some:

- Acacia spec.  (maidenii, etc.)
- Argemone mexicana  (likes many different climates)
- Calea zacatechichi (likes a lot of water, but should also grow if it isn't as humid)
-Ephedra spec. (if dry climate)
- Ipomea spec. & Argyreia nervosa (if climate humid)
- Mimosa spec. (they can be hard to germinate though)
- Nicotiana spec. (if more humid)
... and many more in that list...

If your climate is drier and warm, then you could grow some cactii outside..

As I wrote, it depends on your climate. I would rather grow anything that is possible, but I would start with the easy ones...

i can't wait to move to a drier climate so I can start a cacti garden. I love cacti! Only a little over a year and my dreams may come true.

I've thought about cacti but they take a long time to grow (from what I've read.) I might try some, are there any varieties that are good other than peyote?

and Trichocereus peruvianus.
But also the Ariocarpi (retusus, kotshoubeyanus, etc.) Aztekium riterii, some of the Mamillaria, etc.

The Trichocereus grow fast (really fast), others need a while, but it's still great
