How to get a story published?
    #5919717 -

Has anyone ever tried to get a story published?

I have had the urge to start writing, but have NO IDEA how to go about getting anything published.

I tried surfing for publishers and got mostly magazine publishers and some advertisement links.
Anyone have any suggestions?

First...you need an agent. Most major publishers won't even look at a new writer's work unless they are accompanied by an agent.

Some of the smaller places will, but you have to look around.

Get the 2004 (or if there's a more recent copy, get that) Writer's Market. It has hundreds of agencies and publishers listed in the book.

Prepare to get rejected - a lot. All new writers have to go through this, unfortunately.

write first, in order to publish something, you have to have something to submit
there is no shortcut for this sort of thing

A couple books: 'The Writers Handbook 2004' which contains a whole list of publishers and editors at the back, as well as copyrighting details.
Also there's a book called 'The Writers' Guide to Getting Published'
(click  here  for Amazon details)

Well isn't that obvious you need to write something in order to get it published? Doesn't hurt to know what to do before you write something either, it might give you some motivation.

well you limit the help you'll recieve with such vague details, submit the work to a publisher is the best that can be said as of yet

Check out the link in my sig. That is what I would like to get published.
The story is just an overview. It could be made much longer, with more details.

I would like a professional opinion of it's merits. Is it print worthy?

I have had many wonderful replies about it, from the people here at the Shroomery.
Many people in my personal life that have read it found it helpful and inspiring also.

If my story can help more people, I would like to see it put in print.

Have an editor read it over to correct some grammatical errors and help you reword some sentences.

Also, think about the format. It's been a while since I've read for "leisure" (or published material of that type) but I' not sure how that format would translate into print (e.g. one sentence, then a space, then one sentence, etc.).

Im sure the format will have to be changed somewhat.
That isn't a problem.

It was written more for the ease of reading, rather than following a strict format.
