Scientology is a great example of just how easy it is to manipulate large numbers of people.

Hubbard didn't beleive a word of what he wrote. Scientology was his attempt to rob people of their money so he could have a fat retirement fund. He was even convicted of stealing from the "church" that he founded, which really just amounts to a pyramid scheme.

The fact that people consider it a religion is an insult to actual religion as well as an insult to human intelligence.
