Vinny was wondering if doing a 50/50 casing of verm and coir without a ph buffer is pretty much always doomed to failure. He went around all over the place, and nobody had any crushed oyster or hydrated lime. He nuked case and laid it out over one crumbled cake. This was about a week ago. By now, there are spots where myc is breaking through the surface, but this is very sporadic, and tends to gravitate towards the walls of the container. Vin would really appreciate some suggestions from anybody knowlegeable in the field.

ph buffers can be found at most all major box stores and tree nurseries.
why not do as suggested?
why jeopardize your grow for something like that.
____________
ph adjust your peat mix with vermiculite field capacity pasteurize your casing mix (microwave does not pasteurize)
the odds are not in your favor right now. don't be suprised is trichoderma pays you a visit.

buffering is more of a concern when using peat, as its very acidic.
coir is acidic to an extent too but never seen problems personally using it without buffering. 50/50 for coir/verm is a little high, next go around you might want to use more verm and less coir. coir is nutritious and unless you're on top of things you can end up overlaying. don't wait too long to get that fruiting or else you'll get too much colonization of the casing. (using less coir in the future also means the hydrated lime is even less of a necessesity... kill two birds with one stone!)
i'll bet you're just fine.
the myc is probably breaking through around the walls of the container because when loading a container people have a tendancy to push the middle (of the substrate) down a little lower than the edges. its not a problem, you can patch the areas its coming up first and all is well. in the future be mindful of that and be really careful to keep the substrate level as possible, and the thickness of the casing over that uniform, and you'll get it to poke through evenly without worrying about patching... either way is fine of course, just a small detail that you'll surely improve with a little practice, but it sounds like you should patch right about now and get that bad boy fruiting
