Problems with LCs...
    #5849733 -

I've noticed that when I took one of my cakes and dunked them into h202 they were bubbling for a good 15 minutes as long as i kept moving it around in the h202. This tells me that my bacterial infection was bad. Now, I had used another jar that probably had them same level of bacteria in it and I a piece from deep inside that cake (two actually) and put them in my LCs after only a minute inside h202 soaked paper towels.

So how many people have had bacterial problems with there LC's? I'm not talking green mold or anything, I'm talking the invisible stuff that can make your cakes smelly (what they do to LCs I'm not sure)

I'm hoping maybe the certain kind of bacteria in those jars can't survive in the LC environment or wont have a very negative effect.

One solution I have thought of would be filling half my syringe with h202 before sucking up mycelium. I don't know how well this would work.

So please put your own input from experience.

Just look at the number of "My LC is cloudy is it OK?" posts and you'll get an idea. It's a VERY common problem.

They make LCs cloudy. Not like the puffy clouds of myc, but the solution turns more opaque.

Almost every kind of bacteria loves sugar water. They all have negative effect because they colonize the LC very very fast being single celled organisms. They eat all the sugar and produce their bacterial "piss", which is not good for your LC.

Peroxide is not magic. It stunts the myc and doesn't kill all types of bacteria. Once a culture is contaminated it's worthless unless you want to isolate some of it on agar.

Well, my stuff looks VERY cloudy, so I'm guessing it's a dud. Could it be the honey? Could it be the dirty crap from the vermiculite?

I'm not risking making an LC from it, I'll just redo my LCs from a jar that doesn't smell (much anyway)

I'll tell you how that goes.

Thanks for the help

you put a piece of a cake in a LC?

and one from a jar with bacillus?

and now your LC is cloudy.
you have a bacterial contam in your LC now.

see the chain of events there?

I would suggest using a cleaner inoculant for your LC next time.

I've also got a question about an LC which has me perplexed about what next to do with it. I inoculated some dextrous solution only, with spore scrapings, and though it hasn't gone cloudy, it has rizo strings attached to the black spores. Im not experience enough to tell whether these are part of the spore germination phase or if it is some other form of contam. What exactly should I be expecting when I use spores to make an LC? Obviously not the nice fluffy patches...

Thanks for the help

that sounds okay I guess.

the spores will germinate and grow into mycelium.

Ummm.... Okay. That's what the LC I thought was contaminated looked like. It did smell kind of funny, not sure if it was supposed to.

I have one more LC (cambodian). I think I'll make two cakes using that LC and then make an LC from my Koh Samui crumbled cake when I case it.

Hopefully I can get my cambodian strain to survive. That's been my goal this whole first grow, and my hopes are slowly diminishing. This truley is my last chance.
