Sphagnum Moss and Peat Moss?

I took a trip to my local lowes to see if they had any peat moss, which they had but only in a much larger quantity than i needed; however, i did find some Sphagnum Moss and the bag said that it was used to absorb water in plants and some Peat Moss is Sphagnum Peat Moss and was wondering if the Sphagnum Moss would be fine to use.

I have a bag of Sphagnum peat moss i bought at lowes that is pH adjusted already. Allthough it still needs a tad bit of a buffer..

FYI it was only 5 bucks as well.

does it look like dirt? if so, it's probably just sphagnum peat moss... if it looks like moss, then no.

then no... PEAT moss is different.. it looks like brown dirt with little chunks of wood and roots in it...
your regular moss probably will not work as a casing layer.

found this found this "Don't confuse sphagnum moss with sphagnum peat moss. Sphagnum moss and sphagnum peat moss are not the same product. Sphagnum moss is used in the floral industry to line wire baskets and make wreaths. It is the LIVING moss that grows on top of a sphagnum bog. Sphagnum peat moss is used as a soil conditioner by gardeners. It is the dead material that accumulates in the lower levels of a sphagnum bog. Harvesters of the horticultural peat moss remove the top few inches of the live sphagnum moss before harvesting the peat from the lower levels of the bog."

I would not use just sphagnum because it is quite a bit different. Im not even sure how well the sphagnum peat moss i have is going to work but for 5 bucks i figured i'd try it on a casing or two.

i have successfully used spagnum moss on many of my casings. it didnt compare to coir in as far as texture, but it worked. im not recommending it, but if you have no other choice... you just have top break it up a little as the chunks are pretty big.

no, no. read a little closer. There is a big difference between Sphagnum Moss and Sphagnum Peat Moss. From what i have read sphagnum peat moss should work perfectly fine. However just plain Sphagnum moss would not be the best casing material. apparently some have used it with sucess but i can't help but think their is better options
