My New Job
#5844015 - 07/10/06 07:46 PM (17 years, 6 months ago) |

So I started my new job today. It's developing online classes for the campus that I work with... 3 colleges on one campus. Anyway, I had to take a 45 minute test on sexual harassment, which is funny, cuz my last job I was under investigation for it, and a 45 minute test on how I should be treating the "disabled."
I passed both, I'm a much better person.
But the first thing the two co-workers of mine is how they REALLY don't to shit, at all. I was skeptical at first, but for the 5 hours I was there today, they didn't do shit, expect for call their girls and surf the net. They said they haven't been given an assignment in almost 2 weeks. I'm not sure what to think of this, it could be great to where I could get paid to do my homework or whatever...
I just hate being the new guy and not knowing how things work around the job. Like what I can get away with and what not too. I work on dual 21inch flat panel monitors and I physically had to restrain myself from not jacking in to the Shroomery. It's also my first time working in an office setting, so it's very different than any of the other jobs I've had.
I also got a taste of how the school/beurocracy works. Everything is offically done through emails now, harldy any phone calls and everything requires printing out of hard copies. Everything. Just in case...
I'm just not used to this at all...

Having to adjust to a new work atmosphere definitely blows. One of my least favorite things to do.
The job sounds alright. Personally I can't stand a job where I'm not constantly busy. Makes the time go by much faster.

Well, I have to learn 2 brand new programs, one I can't remember and Dreamweaver, and I also have to brush up on my photoshop skills. I'll be busy.
But it's so relaxed though. No dress code. Since we're all students we can where whatever, eat and drink whenever, take breaks whenever, it's just chill. I definitely needed it after working in retail almost my entire life.

What do you mean when you say you have to develop the online classes? I'd assume you don't mean the curriculum.

No, I get the info that the teachers say they want on the website, I add the information. I create it and program it and check for errors and then send it off to other people to test it even further. And then it get's used by students for the upcoming fall semester. Supposedly faculty sits down and actually talks with you about what they want, they sit there while you actually create the thing....great...

Ouch. Sounds like I'd be constantly fighting the urge to smack my head into the keyboard if I had that job. I don't work well with most people.
Now if they just gave you a packet of info and said "have at it" it wouldn't be so bad.

Well, that's how the job was sold to me as, here's the info, call us when you're done. The guy's I work with said oh no, some assholes will sit there with you. Oh well...
They are fucking great about my class schedule and it's probably the only job I could find in that short period of time that is actually as lax as they are on my availability.

Rock. As long as the pay is nice and the hours good then the work can usually be tolerated, right?
I'm searching for a new job right now too, since in a couple weeks I'm moving about 100 miles to the west of where I am now for school. My only good lead, which I'm hoping I get more than anything, is a full time gig at a headshop/disc golf/hippie clothing store. They need someone who knows a lot about disc golf and since I've been playing daily for 3+ years I'm their man. Hopefully I'll get a call about this one sometime this week.

Awesome man.
The pay is alright, not the most I've ever made, but I've also got grants and student loans too, so it's managable, plus, it's a chill job which is good for my sanity what with school and all, and like I said, them working around my schedule saves my sanity as well.... trade-offs.

Are you studying computer science kinda stuff in school or something completely unrelated to the job?

I once made a sexual innuendo remark about a girl's grandma and a rather large cumbersome vegetable. This was after the girl was talking about getting fucked by 4 dudes in one day and ended up getting herpes.
I got investigated, she did not, even though 3 complaints were filed against her dumbass.
But I did get the head of HR for the entire western half of the US to say smoking boners.
So it was worth it.

That you were under investigation for sexual harrassment.
What happened? This story has to be good.

This was over the phone. He DID NOT want to say it, but I mentioned that how can I correct my behavior if I don't even know what I'm being investigated for.
