thai koh samui and colonization
    #580028 - 03/15/02 08:01 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

well, about a week ago i prepared 4 jars of substrate using stanard PF tek. i innoculated 3 with thai, and one with EQ. about a week later i checked on em and none of the thai had even begun colonization. the EQ jar however was about 35-45% done. the jars are not in an incubator but in the warmest room in my house,(estimated 68-72 degrees) andcovered in tin foil, for a passive air flow. this is my first attempt in this great hobby so i am abit discourages but still hopeful for that one jar. Is the thai strain a slow colonizer or what?
thanks in advance

Your temp is way off! Bring your temp up to 84f, and keep it constant. 68f-72f...Holy shit!! Thats almost cold shocking them...lol. You'll be fine as long as your syringe is good. I'll assume it is...
Somtimes from what i've noticed THAI strains will start slow(maybe take 3-4 days till signs appear),but once they get moving...man they really go! As a matter of fact my avrage run with THAI. K/S is around 3 weeks from start till harvest.
One of my favs. EQ's are somewhat the same, a very reliable strain....pretty potent too :^)
If all is right then you will want to bring the temp up.
GoodLuck!

I figured my temp was low and that inturn may be the reason for the slow colonization. I am currently working on an incubator. i hope this i can get it together soon. thanks for the input

what type of incubator you gonna make? need some quick ideas on that one too, heating pads create major hot spots and don't heat the whole thing, water beds have these heating pads underneith them they are about 3 foot long and have a temp. gauge so you can get that exact heat, then just put them on top of that and you are ready to go, they also cost about 40$, fish tank heater is maybe one that should be tried, my fucking gecko got out of his cage and is chirping all over the house now and being elusive as fuck!

Get 2 rubbermaid tubs and a submersible/variable temp fish tank heater... Stack the rubbermaid tubs, but before you stack them put about 1.5-2 inches of water in the lower tub. Stick your fish tank heater to the bottom of the tub with water in it. Set your temperature to around 85-90. Put your jars in the top tub with the lid on..or maybe a blanket over the top

Instant $27 incubator..

This same principle seems to work well for fruiting chambers too...

Here are the original instructions where I got the idea...

My friend just started playing with koh a month or two ago. She noticed that it seems to start out slow, but once it gets going it really takes off. She had four jars, two of B+ and two of koh. All the jars (rye berries) were innoculated with multispore water at the same time. The B+ were about 1/2 colonized before the koh even got started. The B+ were about 3/4 colonized when the koh finished. Temps were held at 83F.

jelrid that works as good as any. I was using a light bulb and closet but I finally made one of those and its much worth it. You dont have to worry about monitoring temps in your place all the time and gives a piece of mind knowing the temps are good

i know for some people incubators are a must.... but everyone doesnt need one... if you have a warm spot for your jars or live in a warm climate its not necessary.... afoaf hasnt ever used one and still gets like 11-15 day colonization sometimes...

yes that incubator setup is what a lot of us use and its definitely worth every penny; especially since theyre cheap! i got a 9submirsable) 50w heater for about $9 new at my local petstore and the 18gallon tubs were on sale at k-mart for $4.88; under $20! i would be hard pressed to find or create a setup that works comprable to this for that amount of $$$. plus you can close up the top and not have to worry about moisture loss either.

Im using KS as well and colonization at first is slow its speeding UP THOUGH!!!
Theyve been in the incubator for just about 2 weeks now and at least 3-4 jars are 80% done.

My Incubator setup - My incubator is my TV stand draw. Inside from bottom layer to top - 1st a large heating pad which is kept on its lowest setting, on top of that rests a thick towel to make sure direct heat doesnt hit the jars so they dont cook, on top of the towel are the jars, and on top of the jars is another thin layered towel to ensure darkness and also to keep heat in.

Now my room temp. is around 70-75 F and its around 75-80 F inside my incubator at all times.

PS I wouldnt recommend using the heat pad tho although it does work pretty well for me, Id use the tupperware method with water and a fish heater because I am still worried about my pad drying my cakes.

I'd be worried about having a heating pad catching on fire.

That would suck !!!

I use a set up like the Alien incubator.

Works like a charm !
