81-year-old man arrested for smuggling marijuana

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. Customs and border officials have arrested an 81-year-old Canadian man they say was trying to smuggle 168 pounds of marijuana into the United States.
Officials say George Zarafonitis applied for entry into the country yesterday at the Whirlpool Bridge border crossing in Niagara Falls, New York.

During an inspection, border officials discovered three duffel bags in the trunk of Zarafonitis' vehicle.

Customs officials say the bags contained more than 160 vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana and had a street value of more than a half (M) million dollars.

Zarafonitis was arrested on criminal charges of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance. He was turned over to agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation and prosecution by the U-S Attorneys Office.
