The diplomat was to be released after interrogation because of his immunity
SOFIA (bnn)- Police in Sofia arrested Wednesday a Mongolian diplomat and two Bulgarian nationals after seizing them in possession of 120 kilograms (265 pounds) of a banned drug slated for smuggling to neighboring Turkey, an official said.
Interior Ministry Chief Secretary Boyko Borisov said police found the drug in the diplomat's car they checked at a busy intersection in central Sofia.
He identified the drug as amphetamine - a banned central nervous system stimulant. It was prepared for smuggling to Turkey, Borisov said.
The diplomat, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, was to be released after interrogation because of his immunity, prosecutor Nikolay Kokinov said. The Bulgarians would remain in custody, he added.
Last December North Korea recalled two Sofia-based diplomats, who were arrested in neighboring Turkey in the act of smuggling more than 700, 000 pills of captagon - a banned drug similar to the amphetamine.
Experts estimated the seizure as worth $1.5 million (EUR1.14 million).
