after different trials we decided to grow the A-strain on "uncle bens parboiled rice"...we cook it up in much water for maybe 5 mins.....add a lil malt and a spoonful of oil (for 1 kg of rice)....drain it in a cif and rinse with cold water...we put the rice then in filterbags or big jars and inoculate from liquid-culture...this works absolutely great!!!.....the first truffleharvest was amazing!!!....thanxxx workman for this strain....for fruiting i use grasseed....
also pics from my first mature zapotecs are coming soon...i cloned the stems (10 cm long and blackening not blueing)

That's good news
Was the rice that you used brown or white rice?

Moisture seems to be very important for good sclerotia formation. Overly dry substrates form only small scatter sclerotia and it takes forever. Rice can obviously hold much more water than the same amount of grass seed. Pure rice or a mixture of rice and grass seed seems like a good formula.

it is straight uncle bens white rice....we found out that boiling for 5 mins. and adding a tablespoon of oil prevents the cakes to clump...specially if you inoculate from liquid culture (we use 25 ml pipettes)...sclerotia formation was very fast (like 1 month or so) until we opened the bags and harvested masses of small truffles...still i think jars are better for sclerotiaformation...the bags always break the cake when you check them...anyway...pics comin soon...still cant affort a good digi-cam...

B.I.O., that sounds very promising. I'm going to try that when I get my Mex. from Una.
Hey Una, which Mex strain did I win btw?

Hi !
Which recipe do you use for mexicana liquid-culture?
I tried with dextrose water but the spores did not germinate.
Thanks

B.I.O. ,
In your jars, did your rice "cakes" shrink and sweat a lot of moisture?
If so, did you see this as a problem? And what did you do about it?
My friend is hoping that her quart jar of Sporeworks' Mexicana A will not stall.
The forming sclerotia are small, and have turned dark brown on the outside.
Thanks for any tips on cultivating Ps. mexicana in jars.

moisture of the substrate is very important and should be high....we use unicorn filterbags which give enough airation to the cakes....jars are autoclaveable 1 liter ...
today i crumbled the rest of a cake and found some huge sclerotia (grasseed)...
for inoculation i made a liquid culture from water (750 ml in a 1 liter-jar) with a tablespoon of ricemalt (liquid)...we seal the bags just except a lil corner which we leave open for the pipettes...good luck you all

The darkening of the sclerotia is normal. They are actively growing when white, dormant when dark. Many sclerotia will be hidden deep inside the substrate and only revealed at harvest time.
