Guitar troubles
    #5659073 - 05/22/06 02:39 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys, I have a quick question about my instrument, and I figured this'd be the best place to post it.
I recently purchased a classical guitar, and I've found that the three nylon strings (GBe strings) pull themselves out of tune very easily - sometimes even as I'm playing. I was wondering if this was normal for a classical guitar, or if I have some bum tuning pegs?
Thanks in advance.

I would say its the tuning pegs, although, my classical guitar does the exact same thing... recently it hasnt been so bad, so maybe its the strings having to be stretched first?? i have no idea.... but I think its just the tuning pegs. My classical guitar was the cheapest one the store had, so I cant expect mine to be great, but its odd to hear that someone else is having the same problem im having

hmm... nothing i said actually helped did it... eh, im tired, sorry.

sometimes with new strings it takes a while before they don't detune anymore. the nylon strings are probably stretching out more over time.

Hey, thanks to both of you.
Hm, well now that I know at least one other person has this problem, I'm going to chalk it up to the strings being fresh; I would assume the nylon likes to hold its previous shape more then the nickel.
Well, back to playing.. Thanks again!

Most classical guitars go out of tune relatively easily. Ive had my classical for about a year and it goes out of tune pretty easy with new strings, and even once the strings are broken in. That is just something you will have to deal with. If possible you should lower the action on the guitar. That will help it stay in tune.

Nylon strings notoriously go out of tune, as they're more susceptible to heat, humidity, etc., than steel strings. If your classical's on the economy side, you will inevitably encounter tuning and intonation issues.

They shouldn't go out of tune while you are playing though. Good classical strings have a sweet spot right around the proper note. I would say they are strung improperly or your tuning pegs are spinning.

try pulling on the strings tightly, then tune them back up and pull tightly again. sometimes the coil around the peg isn't tight enough. this solved the problem for me.
