I can't get this fucking shit to install onto a emachine w3107 and its pissing me off so fucking much. It don't find network on the on-board LAN adapter or the one in a pci slot the cock shit fucker. then x server won't start like either. Fucking shit Linux OS if you don't have supported hardware. Not a fucking clue what to do now but break these fancy discs ubuntu sent me.

Ubuntu does not represent all of Linux. If it doesn't work for you, feel free to try another distro.

Here's a little education on getting hardware to work in linux. The distro with the best hardware detection is Kanotix. Try this: boot the Kanotix livecd. Verify that all your hardware is working right. If it is, pull up a terminal and run lsmod as root. You will see a list of modules that Kanotix decided to use for your machine; most or all of these modules are hardware drivers. Write these down. (You might not have to write them all down, especially where sound is concerned. Some modules are loaded automatically as dependencies of others. I actually have 21 different sound-related modules.)

Now you have a list of all modules that need to be loaded, and this list is the same across any distro. You can try Ubuntu or anything else, and if all your hardware isn't working right, you can run lsmod, see what modules didn't get loaded, and then load those manually with modprobe.

And if all this is too complicated, just use Kanotix as your installed distro, I hear it's a good one. Or try others.

have you enabled cd-rom to boot from your bios? can you get any cd to boot? have you tried burning your ubuntu disc with an alternative method? perhaps your cd-rs suck...?

I installed Ubuntu on a spare machine. It is my first try at linux, aside from a Knoppix LiveCD that I was testing out on the machine I am currently using (my Windows XP machine). I too had problems getting the onboard network device to work with Ubuntu. Don't give up, where there is a will there is a way (cliche, maybe), but seriously spend some time, check out the ubuntu.com forums as well as the #ubuntu channel on irc.freenode.net. Once I am done my final exams for this semester, I plan to fix this problem. Good luck.

I'd be willing to bet my middle toe that linux supports your hardware. The ubuntu installer just guessed the setting wrong. Hey its a freaking tough job to know all of the hardware that a distro can be installed on. Windows fails at it and they spend money like they are trying to wallpaper seatle in green.

IBM is, so far, a better gaming platform. That's backed by fact, as well. It's not an opinion.

Besides, PC gaming is built primarily around the windows OS. So, if I had to swap OS's, it would need to be entirely windows compatible.

I was told about something called Lindows, but I've gotten mixed opinions about that OS.

I'm pretty ignorant about the finer details of computers. I know how to build them, operate them, and set them up. I can't really debug them or get into complicated OS installations though. I just don't know how to do that.

linspire/lindows is terrible. avoid that one.

why not just set up a dual-boot? linux
for general useage (internet, email, music, word processing, instant messaging, p2p, whatever) and a windows partition strictly for gaming.

I've been considering doing that for some time with my windows box, but to be honest, I spent the vast majority of my time listening to music, surfing the web, watching videos and playing games. I use firefox with foxytunes for web surfing and music, which is perfect for my needs. I use VLC for video playback, which handles everything I need it to, and games run just fine. Windows does everything perfectly.

While I believe in linux and would like to use it more, it's just far too much hassle to switch OS for gaming and general usage, and there aren't really any benefits (for me). I do believe that unix based operating systems tend to be better than windows, but for all my needs my windows install works just fine. I get access to all the lastest graphics drivers and things like flash and quicktime to get embedded content to play properly, which isn't always possible in linux. My system is perfectly stable and clean.

I guess that's the whole problem with Windows, if you've got one thing keeping you on it, it makes it too much of a hassle to switch.

Ununtu is a bastard child of Debian without the good stuff. Kanotix is the best distro
to use as a LiveCD and the installer is great.
Linux expects the user to be computer friendly, not the other way around....

If i didn't already get windows free, I'd use linux, but since I can do what I want with windows, and don't have any major quams (sp?) I stick with it. And I've kind of grown on my ibook.

after my self-satisfied post, I did an adware and virus scan on my box

turns out I had a virus and some malware on my machine, even though I'm NATed, use firefox and am careful about what I download

windows is overrated I guess :shrug:
