Mjshroomer's Journey to Holland Pictorial (40 Images)

Earl;y in the month, I was invited to visit the largest and best of the government run sacred mushroom farm near Teil, Nederlands. My traveling com[panionon this sacred pilgrmimage was none other than Rich Gee, co-author of How to Identify and Grow Psilocybe Mushrooms. After arriving at the Holland Airport we had to take a train to Utrich and then Transfer to another train to the town of Tiel (pronounced as Teul).
In Tiel, we were picked up by one of the two owners and operatiors of Fresh Mushrooms (http://www.freshmushrooms.nl) and driven to our hotel, a small chateau which years before had been a ferry terminal to and from Tiel.
On the way we saw this cool windmill

Finally we approached our hotel after driving over a beautiful large spanned bridge.
Here are two images of the Chateau:

and the 2nd image is of one of the young girls who work at the bar in the chateau.

Inside the chateau, there was a quaint little fireplace where I drank a lot of hot chocolate. Breakfast was complimentary with the room.

On the way into the dining area (therere were two areas for dining) We noticed this sculpture of a quaint Dutch persoon offering us mints.

Here is an image of the first dining room and inside you can see an old RCA victrola./

This next image of the water was photographed frm my 2nd floor room window. It shows the flooding and how the trees in the river were flooded and the town of Tiel across the flooded river is also partially under water near where the ferry arrives as you shall soon see.

A better view of the water and flooded region in front of the hotel facing the town of Tiel across the3 river. The two black posts are where the ferry lands during this flooded period, however, the clay-brownish-red dirt road at the far left upper corner of this next picture is usually where the ferry docks, but much is under deep water as seen here. Also Rich and I observed several t kids on bicycles out there int he tree areas of the water up to their waste in water on mountain bikes trying to get tot he ferry service top go to school in Tiel.
Each morning, dozneds of girls on bicycles arrived to take the ferry across. The ferry goes weather it is one person or fifty.

In this image below I am standing on the ferry boat as it prepares to leave to Tiel from the hotel. It was taken just before we left to Tiel which takes approximately 8-10 minutes to cross the river from the hotel.

In these next two iamges we are leaving the hotel towards Tiel.

Well as you can see in the next image. This is what happens at the hotel when the Rhine River from Germany floods throughout the south to other regions.
There is the hotel Restaurant 't Veeruis Wamel (Land can Maas en Waal).

In this image below, we are landing at Tiel ferry dock. So we are actually facing the bottom center of the picture. Across the water Is where the hotel we were staying at was which became surrouonded by water. (hehehehe)
Tot he left in the image is a public park. SOmeone was sitting on the bench at the waters edge, yet int he water and quite a ways out ont he left you can see park benches submerged partially and also the tall light posts out in the river. Quite a flood. Here are two images from that moment of landing.
The ride was 1 Euro dollar each across. WE did this for four days going and at night, l;ater I will get to the expensive cab rides back because the ferry stops at 8 pm int he evening.

Well the first thing we see after embarking from the ferry was this small bulletin board in front of the ferry station:

So we walked into Tiel, a half mile or so looking for a smoke shop to do you know what. And if for those of youu who are reading do not know what, then go to some other site and find out what "you know what means"
Anyway, we found this danky looking store front with the sign Relax on it and a marijuana leaf.

So we entered the establishement and noticed about five tables ont he left side of the long corribor into the snoke house. At the front table were two foreigners (English) and three empty tables after them and thent he final table int he restaurant ont he far left end of the shop was a table with about 7 jihadists (just klidding) but they were of arab abncestry,[probably Algerian or Egyptian, Maybe Lebanese or somewhere from northern African Dutch Colony.
The owner of the shop was standing by a pin-ball machine (a very old 1960-1970 machine. Probably owned it since it was new.
He had a cardboard list with bad printed english on it advertising different strains of pot for sale.
WE picked a gram of Jack Herer, left the clu and walked back tot he fery boat to our hotel.
We looked at some pictures we took earlier at the mushroom farm (Coming soon in a double adventure in Shroom Talk #2 magazine) and it was most likely sooens cheap home grown pot. IT i was shit and we realized it was in no way, the Amsterdam winning grade of pot from their festival. I think the owner just bought a few kilos of weed, and bagged them up and then labeled them with different names.
So thus ends part one of our trip to the Nederlands.
\Stay tune below for the Amsterdam Supremacy

PArt Two:
Jopurney into Amsterdam and the red light district. Sorry I took no porn images of the girls int he windows. Both Rich and I were verbally abused by some dark Surinamese lady prostitues who thought we were trying to photograph them. I told one that in no way would I ever want a picture of her. That got her real pissed.Rich was doing a 360 cam shot of the district and the canals with boats inthem and a group of women oepend their windowed dors and started screaming at us and we were not photographing them at all. Their pimps, mostly middle easter people stand outside the doors to watch and hassle anyone the girls think are rude or bothering them.
many live sex shows there. WE did not go to them, but I went in 1998 and they have oral and mormal sex buit no orgasms ont he stage. They always end the show before anyone gets one.
Rich took great movie footage of the clubs form outside and maybe even got a few grils int hewindow photos. I will asked him in a few weeks when he is back in town.
So here is the continuation of my journey to Amsterdam from Tiel.
It is a 2-3 mile walk form the ferry in Tiel to the train station. On the way through town we stopped and I bought some Gouoda cheese, the real kind. Not that hard frozen three times before it gets ont he shelf cheese at Amaerican markets.// Then it was 24.00 Eurodollars for twoto Amsterdam one way7.S o each day for four days we f road that train back and forth in the afternoon and then evenings to come home to the Chateau.
WE rode to Utrich and then transfered to Amsterdam.
Here are two shots of the train station in AMsterdam frm two different angles on two different days. the one directly facing the station

And this one from the right of the station facing it.

And now the station is behind the beautiful painting on the wall of the canal with the boats for tourists. WE are traveling down the main street of the city where everything begins from. Alsthough I am not showing a foto, the people were thcik as the street width deep formone end to the other of the street on both sides.

A little walk through the girly red light district and where all of the many coffee shops with pot are we saw this on the street corner of one of the first canals we crossed int he district.

A little architecture where we were hassled by a Surinamese girl behind us in a red light window nude.

and here is a look down the canal. On the streets on the left and right are many live sex show clubs and dozens of Windowed girls offereing their wares.
Rich and I spent about 45 minutes walking along checking them out. Out of maybe 100 girls wwe viewed, only two were of Jessica Alba/Liv Tyler beauty. The rest were average and strange, and many winked at us as we went by.

Finally we found a smoke shop on a main street in the district where many are and we smoked some pot and I had a beer which I rarely do. Never more than about 6 a year.
Here I am rolling s doobie and this was a lot better than the shitty Jack Herer pot we bought in Tiel.

On the wall of the club was this fellow of interest.

So after getting bombed we went outside the club and the shop next door to the club was a sex shop and this is from the window on the street. many of these sex shops were all over the area.

Right next door to the sex shop was the Meat Rack, Here is an image of their window, which also had another smoker's coffee house next door to it.

A little farther down the3 street was another shop selling magic shrooms. We went in and interoduced ourselves and the guy managing the store seemed really friendly. I showed him a few of my books and he was interested and then I took my camera out and ask if i could take a few pictures of the mushroom statues he had hanging on the wall and the guy threw a shit fit at me, threatened to call his arab boss in to beat the shit out of me saying no one takes pictures in his shop or they get beaten. IT was scary. What an asshole.
This is his shop

The next shop, a few doors down the street was also selling shrooms as seen in this image. ANd in the close up next to the image:

Finally we reach the shop of my friend Hans van Den Hurk. He was the first person to be arrested and charged for selling dried mushrooms in Holland and the one who beat the charges and was then allowed to sell only fresh mushrooms. Because of him, all of Holland can sell fresh entheogenic plants legally throoughout the country.
This particular shop is called the Kokopelli and is operated by a col lady named Veronique (pronounced as Vera-neek.)
We smoke some dope in here to. They have computers for customers and foods and drinks and sell everything under the sun which is psychedelic. They even had some P. subaeruginosa for sale and liberty caps and P. azurescens and Peyote, San Pedro, Ibogaine, Caapi, etc. HEre are someimges from their store.

From their grow room which also had an Amanita photo of mine I gave to them in 1998 on the wall but had slipped in the frame and no one bothered to fix it or the knocked over peyote and san pedro plants in their indoor grow room.

And two Huichol Indian Peyote yarn paintings for sale. The lights int he grow room made it almost imopossible to get the true colors to show.
Two images of these yarn paintings.

A few more exotic plant items for sale here at the Kokopelli shop

Here we have peyote and san pedro seeds available.

Two images of architecture:

ANd now a poster on the main street of the district around all of the coffee houses.I took this shot becauise it is Bette Midler and reminded me of her movie rollin "For The Boys" with James Caan. IT looks like a world war 2 recruting posted.

And here on the main stereet form the train station where all the touorists restaurants and malls and shops are is the Amsterdam Sex Museum.
This was outdoors the entrance tot he show.
7 floors (no eleavtor or lifts) and skinny stairs. WE did not go but I wentr in 1998. very erotic ancient paintings and sculptures there including the penis drinking vessels of the Incas.
I took this shot from the street.

And finally a cool postcard saying I don't Inhale

And for a finale, a couple of shots of baby Panaeolus subbalteatus of mycoporn proportions.

HELLA_TIGHT,
Peyote in the Nederlands sells at 20 Euro Dollars a dried gram, althou gh no one is suppose to sell them dried. They cost more fresh. However, it takes 1/4 ounce of dried buttons to be the equivelent of 300-500 milligrams which is a clinical dosage of peyote or the equivelent of an Indian ceremonial dosage, so it comes to about $115 dollars or more for a dose where it is legal.
On the other hand, if you live in Texas or New Mexico, Arizona region you can pick or buy from Indian friends, if you know any, for as cheap as a dollar or two per button. In the late 1960s, they were ten cents a button in quantity.

I fell through the ice into that exact same spot of the canal pictured lol
It was my last full day there and I'd ran out of money and spotted a wallet on the ice. Stupidly I tried walking across the ice to get the wallet and the rest is history lol

I tell you what. Those five days in A holland could have been six weeks in Thailand of longer. Holland is expensicve as hell.
Thirty years ago or so, Europeans became weary of big city vacations. They could not afford to go vacation in Paris, London, Rome, Stockholm, Athens, Madrid, the Mediterrean, stc. So they learn about the cheapness of India, Sri Lanka, Timbuktu, NEpal, Thailand, Indonesia, Bali and most recently the Philipeno Islands ( where mushrooms are offered to tourists at resorts on various Islands).
ANyway, the cost of a vaccation was cheap and Asia and southeast Asia (also, Kampuchea and Vietnam) are nop popular places to trek, backpack or mototcycle into. Beaches, warm hearted people and friendly service at affordable prices.
Unless I am giving a lecture I really doubt that I will go to Eurpoe anymore.
But olland is a trip but then again, anywahere where you are going to that you have not been before is just as much of a strip.
Enjoy if you go back. Don't buy any drugs on the street or step to the doorway or curb or canal if someone intices you to do so.
That way yo are safe. Be like the Japanese. Only spend your money in hotels and restaurants and stores. People on the street try to sell you something by getting you to come over where they are standing. Many people get robbed by knifepoint or ripped ovff with fake drugs.
So stick to the coffee houses if they let you in. Some say smoker friendly but now you need Dutch ID to buy in many of the coffee houses, although theyu are not suppose to sell. New law.

A good reminder. I just got back from France/Italy and man it was expensive (and crowded) in the cities. Not too terribly bad pricewise in the countryside though (for Europe).
As always MJ, your advice is excellent -- as are your photos & reports. I don't usually comment, but I do appreciate your effort and commitment to the cause.

BS and BS. There aren't that many muggings in Amsterdam and not that many fake drugs. The law about needing a Dutch ID isn't there yet, it was just a plan. Tiel is pronounced as Teal and Utrich is Utrecht, my home town.
It's true, you are not allowed to take photos of the girls in the Red Light district.
And Gouda cheese isn't that great, mostly tourist cheese. We have much better cheese than that
Holland, expensive? It's not that much more expensive than America, well maybe a bit with the low dollar value these days. The UK is way more expensive.
Otherwise, good story

Sorry about the mispelled words and mispronounced words.
As for the Gouda cheese, it is great compared to what we get in America. Byt the time it arrives here it has been frozen or close to frozen so when they cut it, the cheese cracks. In Holland, the Gouda cheese is fresh. Old when it gets here, and the USA brands alre also hard. I love Gouda cheese. And I bnring my own Ritz crackers to holland because I do not like biscuit cookies which some call crackers.
I was also robbed there in 1998. I was sitting in a restaurant eating with friends from the Psycoactivity conference, a restautrant on the main street from the train depot.
2 Middle-Easterners walked by my table, one reached over and grabbed my backpack and then they both ran, likity-split past the owner of the restaurant standing by the door, who hawks people in to eat and then they were gone with my shit. Pretty fuckking bold if you ask me.
My only regret is there were four foto aolbiumns in there which represented 25 years of shroom scholar photos, Albert Hofmann, Tim Leary, Andrew Weil, Richard Evans Schultes, Terenc and Dennis mcKenna, etc. My passport, two cameras, money, sporeprints, airline tickets, etc.
And as I noted, a girl at the police station told how her purse strap was razor cut off and stolen while she was in a telephone booth.
last year a good friend of mine whom I warned, stepped over to the canal side in Amsterdam to look at some hash. HE was robbed at knife-point.
I also met some French kids there while visiting in April who had their back-packs stolen while staying at the Youth Hostel in the district, something which occurs a lot I am told.
AS for the people, very friendly.
Have a shroomy day. Especially the ones in Tiel.

That sounds pretty rough. I guess tourists must be the main targets of these robbers. I've never had a problem in the times I went to Amsterdam. I've never been robbed. Only my bike has been stolen a couple of times. But that's pretty standard Gouda is OK, but IMO there are much tastier cheeses here. You should try some others if your ever here again.
