why is an impulse sealer a must?

agar said the impulse sealer is a must im just wonderin i mean if you curl the bags top over enough times and pin it with plastic washing pins, won't it be good enough i mean it would seem like an aweful waste of money to keep on sealing the bags instead of reusing them; And, I am thinking that well it really isnt necessarily a must but then again it adds an additional vector of contamination to overlook this additional premise of defense. I would suppose that it isn't necessary if the incubator is very clean and its erally folded around and pinned enough, that tyou wouldn't have to seal it at all, and that you can use such filter patch spawn bags time and time again... hmmm?

An impulse sealer is a must if you want to ensure sterility. Granted, folding a bag several times and pinning it closed would suffice, but does not replace the seal quality done by an impulse sealer. As far as reusing the bags is concerned, it's a lot of work to clean out a bag, especially a filter patch bag for the next use.
Filter patch bags can be had for as little as $0.39-$0.40 each if you buy 100 or more. I don't see the cost savings there. My time is worth a hell of a lot more than $0.39.
Impulse sealers are not expensive either. A 12" impulse sealer can be had for $29.95 plus shipping. I'm not talking about eBay either. If you want a line on a cost effective impulse sealer shoot me a PM.

If bags aren't your normal modus operandi, but only used occasionally, sure, do as you said. I only use bags for special projects which need to be opened and reopened during the cycle. I twist the bag up and put a piece of metal wire around it. This allows the bag to be opened and closed repeatedly without damage. You still don't want to reuse them however for the reasons Wronguy stated. RR

I no longer use my sealer...
I fold over a few times, and duct tape all exposed edges.... i had always taped AFTER i sealed, as i was paranoid i micro hole hadnt sealed.
I figured i was taping em anyway, so why not just by-pass the impulse sealing and only tape..
This has been many years, and i have seen no difference in sealed/ and taped bags Contam rate didnt change a bit

Well, for one, its ECO FRIENDLY to reuse them... But I do agree my time ain't worth $.39, and neither is a piece of mother nature the size of that bag, is it?
Do you tape 'em before you sterilize em yah?

Grain needs higher temperatures. It would be better to pressure cook them.
