The radio version was a live performance... wonder why they don't play the studio version.

Because Live at Stubbs is 1000 times cooler than the studio album, even though the studio one is cool.

His image is more about pushing the live scene than studio album sales, since he's an old Phishhead who toured for a long time.

Yeah you should definitely check it out. Do you know his whole story?

He was a Phish-head for years, did lots of drugs, then eventually went to Israel where he had a spiritual awakening of sorts...lots of the songs on the album have anti-drug parts to them, actually.

He won't perform on the Sabbath, became very deeply entrenched in his religion.

He had an interesting interview in Relix a few months ago where he was saying why he sings reggae-style music, saying he felt the themes of reggae music from Jamaica were totally on the same level as the themes of Jewish history. It's a valid point to be sure, let my people go and all that.

I have been listing to Matisyahu for awhile now. I first heard a few tracks from him maybe during the summer, or early fall of last year, and didn't know to much about him till i saw him on MTV 2. Then they started pushing The Live at Stubbs album, which i picked up awhile back. People may not agree, but i still believe track 6.Aish Tamid, is maybe the best song on there.  :thumbup:
The question i wanted to ask was, have any of you ever seen the live performance he did with Saul Williams?  They did the song Black Stacy, and let me say it was great. You guys should check that song out if you like his work. :rasta:

The more and more I listen to him, the more I'm starting to NOT like his music.

Not to say that it isn't good. It's just not "as good" as some of the other music I enjoy.

At first it was fresh, but then I started switching between Pepper, Slightly Stoopid, Sublime, LBDA, Ziggy Marley, Ben Wayne, Spoken Gun, Bob Marley, Peter Tosh...

The thing is Matisyahu seems to be heavily, heavily influenced by others. I hear all of these other bands in his music. If you go back and forth and compare you soon find that Matisyahu seems to "emulate" more than "create".

Also, the whole Jewish garb thing is a little much. It's not like we can't tell from his music and name he's a Jew...

I totally agree with the above post. When I first heard Matisyahu I was blown away. But then after hearing him more and more his music "fell apart" like old well worn shoes. I sort of heard his beat in another perspective and it sounded blander and blander and less original.

Overall he's so so IMO, not fantastic.
