micron filters and lid bands only

if i am using a micron filter on the top of my jar with only the band of the lid holding it in place, when i innoculate do i innocultae right through the filter? this isn't going to leave a hole is it? i'll be innoculating birdseed, therfore i will have to shake the jars periodically.

You innoculate through the filter and then put another filter on top of it and screw the lid back on

ahh...that means i must unscrew the band?
excuse my ignorance but i don't understand. that would unsterilize my jars wouldn't it? if i remove the band holding on the filter i might as well squirt spore water UNDER the filter instead of through it?

i'm confused...sorry!

i have some filters comming in as well, so you can count me in on that question:)

I would think that maybe you just inoculate thru the filter, then cover it with an aluminium foil cap. Youll still get air exchange.

The filters conform to the top of the jar. It would be quite easy to remove the band while leaving the first filter in place.

Yes, after you remove the ring the filter will be snug against the threads. Read The Tek

If you use just the filter and ring, I would suggest incubating the jars in a humid environment...or cover the lids with alum foil. (So the grain doesnt dry)

The plastic lids are good

thank you for the clarification. and i do plan to use an incubator this go round for the first time.
and i shouldn't be paranoid about shaking the jars, right?
