Do popcorn jars have to have a filter lid?
    #2757566 - 06/02/04 06:36 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Can i just use the pf style jars ( 4 holes with foil over the top), or do i need to have a filter disk/polyfill plug. Would coffee filters work at all?
Im broke right now and cant afford to go to the store and get any polyfil.

Yeah, you need a filter because there is no dry vermiculite layer to do that. With popcorn you might be able to get away with using a vermiculite layer and not shaking because pcorn colonizes so quickly, but I'm not sure. Polyfill is in most pillows, so if you have an old one around without feathers in it, you can use that.

Unfortunately you do have to use filter discs or tyvek on any grains.
The pf style jar leaves the easily compromised grain too open to contamination if you dont use a good filter media. Tyvek is easy to get at your local post office for free or you can buy a tyvek suit at home depot for about 7 bucks that will make many many filters. Coffee filters are pretty much just good for dust covers. If you think about it the micron screen in a coffee filter allows water molecules to pass through shoulder to shoulder and contams go right alongside. The filters also can hold moisture and act as a wick to allow contams to penetrate easily. Polyfill works but isnt as good as tyvek IMO and tyvek is free so that pretty much sinches it for you. Time for a trip to your local post office!

Good Luck!

How do I get this at the post office? What do I ask for when I go in there?

They usually have them in a pile somewhere or hanging on the wall in one of those plastic wall hanger things. I believe they are for priority mail. I have seen many pics of them posted on here before,as well as links to websites where you can get them mailed to you. You might try a search and see what you come up with.

You do not have to use filter disks or tyvek with grains, I've successfully done WBS with polyfil.

Polyfill works perfectly. Never had a problem, will probably never use anything else. Especially since you can inject right through it.
