Are there any portabel electric stoves or "hot plates" that get hot enough to use to sterilize the jars in a pressure cooker?

That's a good question. I don't have an answer, but I'll add one: Anyone have any experience with electrical pressure cookers? Are they worthy of purchasing for areas witout a stove?

Yep, works just fine.
From experince with a 21.5 quart All American (Huge thick, heavy) with 7 quarts of wbs in it.
No problems.
Might take a small mod, but if you can handle it, you don't need any info on how to do it.
Most will work in stock form, just turn on and off while heating.

Speaking of which, is that 25X any good? anyone use one?
Also, does this mod actually cause the hot plate to stay on full power? Which brings me to my final question, should I be using my hot plate on full power the whole time?

I went down to the local flea market and grabbed a flat hotplate ($2). Wouldn't work on a 21qt All American, but after some time, it got my 18qt Presto up and going. I was outside in sub-freezing temperatures during a slight snow, though. So maybe that kept the heat minimal.

I'm looking into lab-grade burners, like those by Thermolyne. Perhaps one with a stirrer combo (for LCs).

Yes, there are.

But, because PC times can be hours long.
(with considerable weight on the burner)

You want either a LAB or RESTAURANT grade hot plate.
(otherwise, you will be looking at creating a fire hazard)

there is this portable electric stove i just bought yesterday from oshe's for 15 bucks....its a 120 volt stove and it worked on my pressure cooker which is a 24q pressure cooker.....the great thing was that it heated it up just to 15psi so i didnt have to adjust it.
its called toastmaster....im sure you can look it up online somewhere.

I bought a small burner off ebay for $15 dollars with shipping, works great, i have a small pc so it heats up quick like normal, and works fantastic. Check ebay and yes they exist and work well.

It takes a bit longer than a stove, but it gets it to 15psi and keeps it there without burning the house down.

They may not work for large scale sterilizing but they do wonders for pasteurizing bulk
