PC restarting on its own?
    #5293798 - 02/13/06 05:29 AM (17 years, 11 months ago)

My brand new PC priodically restarts on its own. I've got a 400w PSU so I dont think its that. Any suggestions?

almost everytime i have had that problem it is because of a bad stick of memory. the other time it was because of overheating.

the ram is 2 ddr2 Geil sticks. $50 a pop. Grrrrr. Automan, those utilities are not recognized by windows. I tried recovery console and just from a command prompt?

Ultimate Boot CD

Don't assume your power supply is innocent just because it's rated to high enough wattage. Some companies rate PSUs at their average output, other, less trustworthy, companies use maximum output. Check the sticker on the side of the PSU under "+12V." If it says anything less than about "22A," you've got a cheapo.

Or, if it's windows xp,

Start -> control panel -> performance and Maintenance (or system, depends on the look of control panel) -> system -> Advanced tab -> Settings under startup and recovery -> Uncheck automatically restart after system failure and make sure it's not windows that is doing this to you dude.

Thats not true. I have a good Antec PSU and the 12v is rated at 18A and i've even pushed the 12v line to 12.25v and it's gave me no problems at all over the last 2 years.

i had a similar problem, but mine would just shut off completely, then i would have to reset it with the switch on the PSU, mine was the PSU, but yours sounds like heat or ram, if you install ubuntu on your system, it comes with memtest on the GRUB thing.

peace
