Sallys' days may be numbered...
Officials warn against usage of hallucinogen ?Sally D? February 7, 2006 - fox30online.com
A dangerous hallucinogen is slowing creeping into northeast Florida.
It doesn't look dangerous, in fact, it looks harmless. But it's not.
"The concern is that it's such a potent hallucinogen that people can injure themselves," says Dr. Grant Tarbox with Solantic in Jacksonville.
The innocuous looking plant, which looks similar to marijuana, is known as Salvia Divinorum to scientists. On the street, it's called ?Sally D.?
It's so new that most people on the First Coast have never heard of it. Even police say it's barely on their radar screen.
?In this case, I have not heard of anybody using it and have not heard of abuse or mixing it with other drugs. So far, for us, it has not been an issue," says Asst. Chief John Hartley with JSO narcotics.
However, it's definitely been an issue for the people who have had strong and unpredictable hallucinogenic responses to it.
Incidents have been reported of people jumping out of windows while using the substance, which is described to have a psychedelic effect.
"Sally D? can be found in the woods and gardens all over the First Coast. But that's not the dangerous kind. To have an affect on people it needs to be highly cultivated. And in that potent state, some doctors say it's one of the most potent natural hallucinogens ever found.
"Because of the profound potential it has, people should be strongly cautioned against using it," says Hartley.
Unlike "Morning Glory? or ?St. Johns Wort?, other plants with mood altering benefits, ?Sally D ?has not been tested. And experimentation has proven dangerous for some. There are reports of people simply losing control.
Some head shops in big cities sell it openly -- it's legal after all. But those looking for it in Jacksonville say it's still tough to find.
Salvia Divinorum is already banned in Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy and South Korea. But so far, no U.S. states have outlawed it, although some bills are being debated now.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration says it?s studying ?Sally D?.

Wow...way to check your facts fox 30. Louisiana became the first state in the US to outlaw Salvia a few months ago. Also, I'm not sure what kind of pot they have seen, but I have never seen some that looks like dried up leaves. Maybe they all smoke trim. Salvia is definitely going to Schedule 1 sometime in the near future...stock up guys.

I would have thought that the jumping-out-of-a-window line would have gotten old by now, but I guess not.

two nights ago I witnessed a guy take two massive tokes off a bowl of salvia D 20X. after a few seconds he sorta climbed the wall, clawed pictures and hanging items haphazardly from it. then began to spin around, face blank, arms waiving wildly, and completely unresponsive. It looked like he was headded for the door, but he couldn't stop falling into things and running in circles. we made a human fence around him and he diddn't seem to notice, he simply kept desperately trying to escape whatever situation he was in. luckily, he wasn't at all violent or difficult to control. just batshit crazy. he wasnt hitting or anything, just REALLY squirming and flailing. almost knocked over some glass items, luckily i got those under control. If there wasnt't at least a few people there with the presence of mind to stand up and do something (myself and 2 others out of about 12) he would have almost DEFINATELY hurt himself badly.
I suppose it was a little reckless doing it in a party atmosphere. but luckily several of us knew what might occur.
it was pretty hilarious when he got out of it. his face went from being blank, to making sudden eye-contact and looking confused. one guy said "hey, how you doin?" and hes like "how, the, FUCKIN FUCK AM I FUCKIN DOING?" ha ha ha
but yeah, if there was a window, i'm almost certain he would have jumped out of it.

On another term, this reminded of "Substance D" from A Scanner Darkly. Not really related, but still interesting that their little name is so similar.

Good thing you guys are quick thinking. Window-jumping really does have the potential to happen, I just think it's perhaps a bit overplayed by the media, especially in contrast to all the potential positive things that could happen. You never hear "LSD, with the potential to help people find God, understand themselves, understand reality, treat all sorts of mental disorders, and create feelings of peace, love, and unity between the overwhelming majority of people." Instead you hear "LSD, with the potential to make you jump out of a window."
Damn the WoD.

<<The innocuous looking plant, which looks similar to marijuana>>
Uh, no. It only looks 'similar to marijuana' because marijuana is illegal in the United States and the media wishes to cast a dark image of salvia to the public. They're trying desparately to link an illegal substance to one that is not yet illegal to make it look worse than it is. The only similarity I see with salvia and marijuana is that they are both plants.

I agree, I think that advertising it as a weed replacement may be the straw that breaks the legistlative back. I hope not though

Without a doubt. There's talk of scheduling it here in Tennessee.

I usually have such a hard time escaping the overwhelming increase in gravity that Salvia causes, that I would never make it to a window. My body becomes like a big sack of lead.

Isn't this the opposite? So, are people openly admitting now that they don't want to have profound (spiritually?) experiences, or am I misusing his meaning of profound?

I'm not so sure that I oppose outlawing it. It will open up a new form of untaxed employment throughout the country.
The outlawing of substances has given many people a chance to line their pockets.
There are two sides to every coin.

I have a feeling you won't be able to find salvia from your neighborhood drug dealer even if it is illegal. Not too many people enjoy using it more than once. I guess anyone who really feels it is worthwhile can just get a cutting.

Yep. It'll be more like trying to import it from online shops in other countries, mislabeling extracts, etc. No way is it going to become a popular underground drug. Most people won't miss it.

Over the last two years i've personaly seen it growing in popularity quite a bit. It may not gain the notoriety of being as great as the other hallucinogens, but it would be missed if taken away. Just like any of the 2C's..

is 'people jumping out of windows' like the new catch phrase or something? I swear I keep hearing this guy or that girl or blah blah when in reality, people do stupid and very dangerous things ALL THE TIME on alcohol and last I knew there was no huge push for making THAT illegal.
